I have been working at BD full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I have a long career in the field service industry and CareFusion had been one of the most enjoyable. Compensation is above average and they do a good job on not micromanaging. They have good processes and it's been an enjoyable position.

    Cons

Sometimes the work/life balance can get skewed with providing after hours coverage.

    Advice to Management

Look for ways better was to provide succession planning. There are a lot of opportunities, but I rarely get any feedback from job applications.

I worked at BD full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

BD has a strong culture and great benefits. It is a very ethical company. Company processes are based on best practices in the industry. As they grow, they try to create discipline and consistency in these practices across the company.

    Cons

Most of the company practices are rooted in widget manufacturing culture. Current organizational structure is extremely matrixed, which would allow for great deficiencies in manufacturing. However, as the company moves more towards software, this matrixed culture will introduce significant obstacles to innovation and creativity.

    Advice to Management

A one solution does not necessarily fits all. Widget manufacturing practices might be applicable to software development.

I have been working at BD full-time

    Pros

Lots to do. You won't get bored. Most of the people there are very nice and want to do the right thing.

    Cons

Mediocre software engineers and non-technical managers are hiring more mediocre engineers because they don't know any better. Management things the solution to being behind schedule is to bring in more people when what they should do is get rid of the people who don't belong and let the brightest make the technical decisions.

    Advice to Management

I think it's a lost cause at this point but my advice is: Stop allowing non technical managers to choose software engineers. Don't allow architects who use patterns have been proved inefficient 10 years ago to unilaterally make decisions.

I worked at BD full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The work was interesting and challenging, good pay and benefits.

    Cons

Management was very lacking in that the management that was in charge was homegrown and had severe tunnel vision. Not wanting to break through with any new technology unless it was first given by corporate. Lacked the spine to make any necessary changes to improve quality of work life and balance.
BD is too busy buying the competition and letting the purchased company dictate the new culture and outlook of the future instead of the purchased company adopting BD culture and values.

    Advice to Management

CLEAN HOUSE! Bring in fresh talent that is not from the area.

    Pros

Good vacation, options to move within the company.

    Cons

Health benefits have declined. Hard workers are rewarded with more work while the underperformers coast

    Advice to Management

Promote your talent from within. Pay them what they are worth.

I worked at BD full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Large company, lots of flexibility and potential for growth if you are willing to assimilate.

    Cons

Large company, incredible inefficiencies, lack of process improvement, lack of communication, lack of innovation, pretty dull. Pretty crappy insurance for a medical company. Many people would consider the cons sour grapes from an acquisition, but it's not. I spend 10 years working for Carefusion, it had it's own problems, all places do, but BD was just boring. I remember walking the hallway of their HQ and seeing portraits of leadership over the years. Just a bunch of old white men. No diversity, no thinking differently, just boring. They try to pretend that they are hip, but that's the equivalent of your grandfather trying to snapchat with you. If you are ready to just sit back and cruise to retirement, then maybe this is the place for you as long as you know how to play the game.

    Advice to Management

None, they will do what they want. Buy great companies, strip the resources, and get rid of the people and things that made them great.
