I worked at BD full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Great company and great products.

    Cons

Poor management. Very cliqueish which rules the way they manage. Does not care about the customers, only the numbers.

    Advice to Management

Stop at looking at the numbers and take care of your customers

I worked at BD full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Peers were nice and knowledgable, and the technologies were good.

    Cons

Way too much stress and politics. BD could be thinned-out so nicely and run like a well-oiled machine, but it's a gold old boy network of lifers and their friends.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the people who actually do the work. They have much better ideas than your cronies and all their graphs and dashboards.

I worked at BD full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

decent pay if you are young and starting out.

    Cons

Managers are putting out fires as opposed to working toward prevention of problems, and very poor communication through the ranks. Archaic computer systems that hinder progress, and terrible scheduling also cause many problems. They brag about being honest, when they are very deceptive in reality. I would not recommend them at all.

    Advice to Management

Stop having so many meetings, actually solve some problems instead. Return to being a service and science motivated company, instead of a sales motivated company. If I had to listen to another sales cheer leading session, I was going to go insane.

"Management thinks that customers buy ridiculous bureaucratic process, rather than good products..."

    Pros

    Good benefits.
    Challenging technologies and work environment.
Some of the best peer relationships I have ever developed in industry.
    Good total compensation package.

    Cons

Over the last decade, the company has undergone a painful transition. What used to be a responsive market innovator, has slowly become an ineffective Leviathan. The downward spiral started innocently enough. Middle Managers took no risks, kept their heads down, eventually becoming Senior Managers. These new Senior Managers lacked even the most fundamental product development experience. As a result, they make even the seemingly simplest of decisions by committee (after a half-dozen committee meetings of course).
Recognizing the ineffective nature of this course of action, the company somehow concluded that their problems were attributable to a lack of codified processes and procedures. So the company immersed itself in process. And procedure. And schedule. And committee. And review board. The result is a bloated organizational morass that cannot respond to any market challenge. An organization that places the value of process, over the value of product. An organization that crushes innovation (which must by necessity challenge convention). An organization that is dying by the crushing weight of it's own self-imposed bloat.

    Advice to Management

Corporate needs to take the proverbial knife to VP and Director level management in Sparks (particularly in R&D and Engineering). Get rid of the Harvard Business School fad-of-the-month mentality, and get back to some old-school Tom Peters management style.

    Pros

BD is a stable, profitable company with good benefits

    Cons

You are worked to death...keep piling on the work with NO resources or concern about how the worker bees will get it done

    Advice to Management

When your employees say it can not happen, don't say make it happen with no resources or help. Be realistic and do not criticize employees for not meeting 100% of their goals when they are given the responsibilities of 2.5 FTEs
