I worked at BDO USA full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great network of office across the country. All working together to support on another. Great community building, not a better company in the industry.

    Cons

I found little to complain about. I appreciate a clear hierarchy, though it removes some autonomy of an individual office.

    Advice to Management

Keep on growing. Catch EY and take your place among the big four where you belong. You've got the infrastructure, you just need to grow.

I worked at BDO USA as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -People were friendly.
    -Pay is competitive.
    -Would recommend as an internship.

    Cons

-Very corporate and somewhat uptight policies.
-Not much interactions with other workers due to the setup of the office.

    Advice to Management

Understand what younger employees want to try to make the environment more friendly.

    Pros

Interesting people, did not have to show up in office every day; could use your judgment

    Cons

Nothing was ever done fast enough or good enough

    Advice to Management

Ask personnel about issues holding them back

"Work/life balance great in off seasons. Favoritism is huge."

I worked at BDO USA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - During the off season its possible to take time off and work from home
    - You see a wide variety of clients and work which allows for a lot of learning and experience
    - Relatively young professionals

    Cons

    - Really long hours as expected with public accounting
    - Perception is reality. People are too focus on what everyone else is doing and not enough focus on their own work
    - Must be willing to go with the flow of the common beliefs in the office or be outcasted. Any criticism of upper management or how things are done will not get you far
    - A lot of favoritism and cliques
    - Way too much ego and patting of the back with upper management to notice how unhappy their staff is
    - High high turnover

    Advice to Management

Focus more on your staff and listen to them. They have good ideas that could get the office out of the gutters.

I worked at BDO USA full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

None besides the work life balance, doing charity work, CPA exam benefits, and I guess the coworkers are nice. If I could give this company 0 star, I would. Easy interviews to get an offer based largely on culture fit.

    Cons

The first few weeks of training are repetitive and the exams you're required to take at the end of each chapter are unhelpful because you aren't even shown the right answers or what you got wrong after passing. Their national training can definitely be improved especially with some of the larger seminars. Had a terrible experience with certain HR person lady was very rude, insensitive, and judging. But 2 of the other HR ladies were nicer.

    Advice to Management

Improve your management, try to understand your employees better instead of treating things as black and white.

Great co-workers, did a lot of charity work for the community.

    Cons

Travelled by TTC, took over 1 hour to get to work.

    Advice to Management

    None

    Pros

BDO has an excellent culture, the people that work there make it fun to come to work everyday. The management is very accommodating and flexible. There's a lot of positive change that is happening and would be excited to see how that progresses. Great access to partners and can really make am impact if you choose to do so.

    Cons

The client base at time can consist of some less sophisticated clients, however, that occurs within any client pool in public accounting.

I worked at BDO USA full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Parter and seniors are very supportive when I first enter the firm. I got to do all kinds of projects, sometimes rather difficult ones in the first year, however there is always someone helping me when I got stuck.

    Cons

Smaller than the big 4 of course. Requires to work overtime in the tax busy season as most of the accounting firms do. Typical public accounting firm.

    Advice to Management

The management have already done a pretty good job. Wish they keep it as that way.

I have been working at BDO USA full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The people and the environment. There is a lot of diversity in the tasks you perform from tax processing to EA. The firm is focused on its mission.

    Cons

Long hours during both tax seasons up to 15-16 hour says including Saturdays. It can sometimes appear that the value that the administrative staff brings is overlooked and under valued. Career path for administrative staff is not mapped out.

    Advice to Management

Flex time needs to be extended to the administrative staff the same way it is extended to the rest of the employees.
