I have been working at BDO USA full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Lots of work to do, never a dull moment. BDO is growing.

    Cons

If you work for any of the support services, such as finance or IT, you are treated as overhead and have no real career path or path to becoming a parnter or upper management.
Support departments are woefully understaffed and underfunded, but the business lines complain that we aren't doing enough for them and are not completing work in a timely fashion.

Core values and work life balance are spouted at management meetings, but the people exemplified by management are those who forego having a life and work days on end without breaks.

12+ hour days and lots of calls on nights and weekends are the norm, not the exception.

    Advice to Management

What is expected of us and what is rewarded doesnt match what the consultants told you to say to us. Corporate cultures are not purchased like groceries, they are forged by the actions and priorities of corporate leadership and especially middle management.

    Pros

The company itself does a decent job of providing perks for employees. There are 13 paid holidays per year including the entire week from Christmas Day till New Year's Day. Also, there's an open bar at basically every event, and you're allowed to expense alcoholic purchases on trips. They really fling money around at BDO, which is humorous.

    Cons

OVERWORKED. I worked an average of 50 hours a week with a minimum of 45 hours a week and a maximum of 75 hours a week. The flex policy is also terrible--you can only flex two hours a week. Meaning if you work 75 hours for the week, on Friday you can only leave 2 hours early--any earlier and you'll have to use PTO despite putting in two weeks' work already.

    Advice to Management

utilize realistic hours, give leaders leadership training (especially the T&D manager), have HR examine employee complaints better, and just TRY harder

I worked at BDO USA full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Strong sense of loyalty to the staff, so if you work well you can feel pretty secure in your position. Some freedom to innovate in your own particular sphere of influence, and a pretty good understanding of work-life balance. Access to good technology for doing your job and support to get the job done right.

    Cons

There is a heavy operational focus and difficulty in setting priorities. The focus seems to be on keeping the lights on, staying at or below budget, and keeping upper management happy. These are all good things, but there's no time left over for actually "partnering with the business" or for working to move things forward. Too much focus on best of breed and customization, rather than on agility and innovation.

Loyalty is sometimes practiced to a fault; some managers in key positions should be been replaced years ago.

Very limited training opportunities, and career advancement is basically only through attrition.

    Advice to Management

Branch out from the operational point of view and start looking at ways to continue to grow value to the business.
Recognize those services that are really commodities and stop trying to offer them in house.
Pay attention to whether your managers are actually doing their work and if their team and peers respect them...if they don't, odds are the story you're being sold by that manager doesn't match reality.

I have been working at BDO USA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Extremely flexible and laid back atmosphere. Everyone works together as a team. Partners and management are approachable and willing to answer questions. The technical expertise in the office is vast and the willingness to develop and teach staff and seniors is clearly evident. The career advisor program works great. If you have an area of tax that you would like to focus on, management does their best to get you exposure and opportunities. The culture of the office is great and management is whole heartedly embracing the new core values, not just giving lip service. The office is growing and there is limitless opportunity. It is the best CPA firm to work for in West Michigan. Learning and growth focus with extremely intelligent and knowledgeable people to teach, broad client base, and a client service focus is making BDO the place to be. People who know, know BDO!

    Cons

Naturally, the hours during busy season can be difficult. However, what is great is that management has recognized this and they are actually doing something about it.
As the office has been growing like a weed, seating has been getting tight leading to creative solutions.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work!! Thank you for being transparent and willing to do what you can for your people.

Wide variety of clients and fun culture. Meaningful responsibilities from your first day.

    Cons

Compensation appears to be below some of the larger firms and busy season seems to drag on longer than you might find elsewhere.
