I have been working at BDO USA (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Better work life balance in comparison to Big4. Size of clients allows for multiple experiences and different industry knowledge

    Cons

The quality of associates hired at the firm seems to vary.

I worked at BDO USA full-time

    Pros

It's a paycheck, though unemployment might be better than slavery. They put on a nice facade.

    Cons

BDO Woodbridge commercial audit falls into the 2 stars category. This is a very bottom line driven group. The budgets and staffing are set at about half of what is normal in other public accounting firm based on my past experience at other firms. This is probably intentional to extract the maximum value from each job for the partners. Great for the partners, not great for the staff.

Regardless of your level, you will be constantly" earning your keep", the busier you are, the happier your boss is. I felt like I was chained to my computer for months, weekend work and busy season hours are mandatory for 4 months of the year, 1 month longer than at other firms or even a different office of the same firm.

The office functions like a small firm under the BDO name. There isn't any career development and management doesn't care about your wishes and wants, it's all about getting the job done the way they want it done and in the time they want it done while offering little in the way of guidance. You are a tool to them and nothing more. There were other 1 star reviews for this office with many helpful clicks that got deleted for some reason, so I guess I'm not alone in feeling this way. They weren't posted when I joined so I mistakenly thought it was a good place to work.

I have been working at BDO USA as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent group, everyone willing to teach and share experience. Learning curve can be huge if new to international but overall great.

    Cons

Not a ton of cons, usual accounting firm hours during busy season.

I have been working at BDO USA full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

People first. Helping people thrive. Concerned always. Family. Great place to be. Bad eggs don't last long. Gone through many bad leaders in the past

    Cons

Too many internal emails and functions. Took too long to get rid of bad leaders in NY and consulting. All good now

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing. Never go back

I have been working at BDO USA full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Rewards performers; unusually low turnover; high profile matters; good learning experiences ; the poor reviews I have read are aberrations. Accomplished professionals rarely leave BDOC and recruiting is robust. Yes. Low performers are held accountable.

    Cons

Tend to work in specific departments; professional services is not a place to coast. If you are committed to professional services and the sacrifices that come with it, then BDOC mitigates many of the se cons.

    Advice to Management

Continue to communicate what it takes to succeed; allow us to work across groups

I have been working at BDO USA full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people, flexibility, big clients, complex accounting issues to challenge you, promotions if you are up for it

    Cons

Overtime if assigned to big client, difficult clients, work overload, understaffed engagement teams, high staff turnaround and inadequate training

    Advice to Management

Invest on employee training, assign new staff properly to make sure they learn what they need to learn, do not worry about budget.

I worked at BDO USA full-time

    Pros

There are 5 partners that know what they are doing and are willing to teach so long as time permits.

    Cons

    Everything you can imagine:
    1) They hire people who are under qualified to high positions such as Managing Director/Sr. Manager. There is one in particular who knows nothing in tax and advertises being a partner.
    2) Pay is super, super low....so if you want to be able to pay your bills without racking up debt, stay far away! The workers who perform the work get very little, to nothing to show for their efforts in terms of higher compensation and bonus. As an example, manager salaries after the 2016 raises were in the mid 80K's range, and no, I am not making this up!
    3) Backstabbing is very high, so brace yourselves.

    Advice to Management

You are doing great guys! Keep up the awesome work! 90% Turnover every 3-4 years is just part of the industry average!

    Pros

Flexible work schedule, travel and competitive salary. The partners at the firm are sincerely concerned about your success. The client base is also very strong.

    Cons

Heavy work load, especially during busy season. But that is expected at any cpa firm. Sometimes the amount of travel that is required is annoying.

    Advice to Management
