    Various pros & cons

Nov 29, 2022 - Experienced Audit Associate in Jacksonville, FL

    Pros

    - Lots of opportunity for promotion in a relatively short amount of time. Some people in my office went from intern, to associate, to experienced associated (some might even have skipped experienced), to senior in say two years. Some spent one year as a senior and got bumped up to manager. Could be due to high turnover, but if you stuck around and were willing to do the work, you could move up fast. - The national training the firm sends you to is really good and helpful. They’ll send you almost every year it seems. Also the trainings are fun and a good way to socialize and meet colleagues from other offices. - You could dress pretty casually & wear jeans if working from the office rather than the client site. - Lots of opportunity to work on different things. If you voiced the desire to take on more or work on something new, assuming you were good, management would give you the chance and make it happen. Very rarely was I just tasked with the same accounts/FSAs. - Also, if you’re a big proponent of diversity & inclusion, the firm was very tolerant of tattoos, unnatural hair colors, piercings, etc. The audit department was predominately women, although again that may be public accounting in general as it seems a lot of women are going into tax/audit now more than before.

    Cons

    - The office I worked at had just recently acquired a local firm and many of the management/people from the local firm stuck around. Although the expectations of a bigger international firm (work load, hours, etc.) didn’t exactly mesh with the vibe and expectations that people from the local firm were used to. Also, with the higher fees that come with BDO compared to the smaller firm, partners tried to get new clients that were bigger and more complex. Although the audit department was often understaffed and over stretched to accommodate these new, bigger clients. Engagements were often messy and didn’t have adequate resources. - The growing pains of transitions from local alliance firm to BDO caused a lot of drama, turnover, and that often trickled down to the staff. Billable hours were watched like a hawk by management, we were required to come into the office on weekends rather than work remotely from home or a cafe just so they could ensure we were working. This is all probably par for the course in public accounting, especially once you get to BDO sized/Big 4…but was still a con nonetheless.

    Management Lacks Integrity and Honesty

Nov 30, 2022 - Sr. Tax Associate in Houston, TX

    Business Outlook

    Pros

    Good project experience and variety.

    Cons

Extemely poor and ineffective processes - Wasted a lot of time due to inefficiencies propagated by inept management. Many people were there to sabatoge your work so you would look bad. A lot of backstabbers and liars. Some are being investigated for ethics violations. Be ware. They try to fool young il-informed fresh grads.

Ensure you land at the right office and you'll have a WONDERFUL career

    Oct 24, 2022 - Audit Manager
    Recommend

    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - Highly focused on culture and it is genuine throughout the entire company - Rapidly growing which brings all kinds of paths to success in your career - The office I work at has truly exceptional partner group representing the best leaders i have ever experienced in my career

    Cons

    - A con to growth is you often work on transitioning clients as the firm discovers who they want as clients long-term - I have worked an incredible amount of hours and although these are the best leaders i have worked for, until I spoke up my excessive work went unnoticed. After I brought it up, it was fixed. - Comp could be better compared to other firms in the BDO Tier

Good, but revolving door for a reason

    Nov 7, 2022 - Administrative Assistant
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Great team of admins A full week off at the end of the year (completely separated from your PTO) Some flexibility in work schedule for certain circumstances. Work for the most part isn’t micromanaged. OT opportunities

    Cons

Team mindset usually results in you taking on a lot of extra work for no compensation. Pay is pretty non-substantial across the board. Admin management can be controlling. Not letting you work from home like other same level positions in other business lines and less freedom in general. Punish you for being an admin, basically. Very little chance of upward movement or switching business lines. In general very little development mentorship. The work takes precedence so often during busy season you will be expected (forced) to do overtime.

    Putting people last

    Pros

    It's a job with a paycheck

    Cons

bdo operates like it's stuck in the past, there are very few initiatives to innovate so long as they continue to exploit new hires. They use outdated software and processes for work that is already being automated by the Big 4. For them to claim that one of their core values is "embrace change" is laughable. They operate on a churn and burn model of hiring employees, overworking them (working weekends year-round is common), and then acting surprised when good employees quit. There is no real direction from the top on where the firm is headed, and it shows in the ambiguous “culture” they claim to have. Simply put, if you were to assign a period to describe the company's culture it would be the 1970's or 80's. Office politics are rampant in the firm with backstabbing and favoritism being common. During busy season certain offices hoard work, leading to extreme and unnecessary burnout for employees doing the actual work. Employees who make suggestions on sharing workload to increase productivity are ostracized. bdo pays lip-service to its "values" but it’s merely a distraction from the toxic and outdated company that it really is.

    Pros

    Cons

The only downfall working in public accounting is that it's very busy. If you do good work, you will be handed more. On the flip side is a great thing.
