    Pros

Expectations are high. They give you opportunities to gain experience in the field. Safety is the top priority. They depend on you to do real work and contribute to the team.

    Cons

It seems to be a little understaffed so everyone is working non stop to keep up. In light of that though the atmosphere is accommodating and so is the pay. You also gain much more experience and are given more responsibility than in other companies.

    Advice to Management

Keep the small company feel and culture as you begin to grow. It helps considerably with employee moral and it makes people want to come to work everyday.

    Pros

    Excellent benefits
Real bonus program paid annually and substantial part of compensation package
    Comfortable work environment
Growing part of overall BHP corporation while other main businesses (mining) are static
Petroleum management got our corporate parent to change our business cycle because of constant long hours - listened and took action

    Cons

Frequent long hours, weeknights with laptop or come in on weekends
Supervise too many people to be effective for all employees

    Advice to Management

Match promotions to stated standards for supervisors and managers - some recent promotions in finance are individuals that are not well liked or respected by their peers or subordinates. By promoting such individuals, this directly contradicting stated policy that supervisors are key to employee success. Promoting such divisive and polarizing individuals makes the overall employee base jaded and cynical. We should identify bad supervisors and either train them better or make them sole contributors, not overseeing people.

I worked at BHP Billiton full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Compensation is at the 99%
    Benefits at 99%
Retirement and stock options at 99%
    Bonus options at 99%
Subsidized lunch for $2 with healthy and better than your average cafe options
Choose Flexible work schedule 9/80 or work every friday or half day Fridays
Can gain responsibility and diversify workload if you CHOOSE to, or don't
Bottom up performance review.. performance is evaluated by direct supervisor, group supervisor, VP, President

    Cons

Processes are geared toward offshore and inefficient for land operations
Sometimes slow work load during "waiting period"
No sense of urgency to complete projects, unable to work on small projects that should take a day or two ends up taking a week or two
Slow career progression in terms of actual change in duties not just title changes
No visibility into other teams outside your own

    Advice to Management

Take HR issues seriously and show you care, do not sweep them under the rug and hope no one brings them up
Example: employee issues with supervisor, sexual harassment, etc.

Executive level management is very impressive and the change between CEO's in culture is very noticeable and will likely reduce turnover

Senior management level needs proper management training

I worked at BHP Billiton full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great pay and benefits! The company pays more than lip service to it's commitment to sustainability (keeping employees/contractors safe, operating responsibly, protecting the environment, etc.).. Many A+ managers and individual contributors. World class assets. Good leadership at the helm of the corporation and the Petroleum business. Plenty of opportunity to build your own career and be rewarded for it provided you are willing to put forth the effort required.

    Cons

Dealing with draconian processes and bureaucracies can be cumbersome. Under previous administrations a culture of fear emerged and many people were hesitant to take vacation or sick time for fear of not doing some work. This is improving.

    Advice to Management

BHP is undergoing a massive corporate culture redefinition. Stay the course--keep doing what you're doing--it's working!
