    Pros

Lots of great opportunities to get exposure to different aspects of BIS, and lunchtime talks are great. Friendly place to work.

    Cons

Not many cons. BIS is changing to promote on merit more but a lot of people in upper positions who appear to be there on a legacy basis.

    Advice to Management

Deliver on promises to promote on merit and believe in the younger team

I worked at BIS full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Interest portfolio ranging from business regulation to energy, so wide range of potential projects to work on. One of the bigger Government departments, so well-known.

    Cons

Lack of clear focus, line managers tend to have poor management skills and there are a lot of people who don't seem to do a lot because poor performers are not managed properly.

    Advice to Management

Take people management and performance management more seriously; agree a clear focus with ministers for the business and deliver against that.

    I worked at BIS full-time

    Pros

Wide range of topics to pick from and all at the centre of today's political interest. Training available and encouraged.

    Cons

Due to the political context, focus can change quickly and drastically leading sometimes to lack of clarity as to what is worth spending time on.

    Advice to Management

Listening to staff is a great first step but acting on feedback is a better one.

    Positive Outlook

    I worked at BIS full-time

    Pros

High level of responsibility and good exposure to senior ministers. Amazing if you love the world of politics or economics, however, if this is not the case, may not be a suitable role

    Cons

Work can be very slow to get through, and sometimes it can be too relaxed. If you want to be busy throughout the day, may not be the right job for you.

    Advice to Management

challenge the students as they have a lot of potential, therefore, should give them even more of responsibility.
