I worked at BIS full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

For seven years I had a fantastic time. The work was hard but fair and the methodology behind the organisation was spot on. Fellow staff and senior management were supportive, challenging and prepared to listen and guide.

    Cons

After the introduction of austerity the culture and values disappeared overnight. Bullying and discrimination by senior management (even as far as the minister and permanent secretary) became rife and in its attempts to get rid of percieved troublemakers / whistle blowers, breaking employment laws and procedures was not a hurdle (proven).

    Advice to Management

You will easily recognise who I am and I have not forgotten my treatment by you. At the moment the employment laws will not support my challenge due to the changes made by the coalitition but a watching brief is continuing. You're policies were illegal and boarded on ageist and I can only hope to prove this eventually.

    Pros

High profile, interesting and challenging work.
    Some great colleagues.
    Good pay, holidays and benefits.
    Good training.

    Cons

Dwindling resources and lack of capacity due to excessive cuts.
    Poor leadership.

    London-centric.
    Disorganised.
    Highly reactive.
    Ridiculously heavy workloads.
    Gradist.
    Rhetoric without substance.
    A lack of long-term strategy.

    Advice to Management

The department simply cannot continue to deliver everything on such limited budget and resources.

I have been working at BIS full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Really interesting range of work.
Lots of very able, personable and committed staff.

    Cons

Pretty top down and old fashioned in its way of working.
Management style leans heavily towards passing instructions down the line - doesn't seem comfortable with a genuinely collaborative or enabling approach.
I've worked in more than 5 central government departments and whilst I have enjoyed the work in BIS, it would be bottom of my list as an organisation.

    Advice to Management

There does feel to be a genuine disconnect between stated values and observable behaviours - which is perhaps worth a bit of reflection.

I have been working at BIS part-time

    Pros

Decent pension, fantastic (v expensive) coffee lounge, very little pressure to achieve a successful outcome- ever.

    Cons

Very poor morale. Private sector implants get paid 3 times the salary of long tried and tested civil servants. Very little pressure to achieve a successful outcome- ever

    Advice to Management

    Go back to OGC
