    I worked at BIS full-time

    Pros

Wide range of topics to pick from and all at the centre of today's political interest. Training available and encouraged.

    Cons

Due to the political context, focus can change quickly and drastically leading sometimes to lack of clarity as to what is worth spending time on.

    Advice to Management

Listening to staff is a great first step but acting on feedback is a better one.

    I worked at BIS full-time

    Pros

High level of responsibility and good exposure to senior ministers. Amazing if you love the world of politics or economics, however, if this is not the case, may not be a suitable role

    Cons

Work can be very slow to get through, and sometimes it can be too relaxed. If you want to be busy throughout the day, may not be the right job for you.

    Advice to Management

challenge the students as they have a lot of potential, therefore, should give them even more of responsibility.

I have been working at BIS full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Really interesting range of work.
Lots of very able, personable and committed staff.

    Cons

Pretty top down and old fashioned in its way of working.
Management style leans heavily towards passing instructions down the line - doesn't seem comfortable with a genuinely collaborative or enabling approach.
I've worked in more than 5 central government departments and whilst I have enjoyed the work in BIS, it would be bottom of my list as an organisation.

    Advice to Management

There does feel to be a genuine disconnect between stated values and observable behaviours - which is perhaps worth a bit of reflection.

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at BIS as a contractor

    Pros

A great new Chief Digital Officer brought in from the Government Digital Service to drive digital transformation and cost savings.

    Cons

Entrenched civil service attitudes. Reduced savings target will have an impact on transformational activity. Too many people not willing to be bold enough.

    Advice to Management

pursue aggressive savings targets. Stop building new digital capability in London but create real centres around the country.

I have been working at BIS full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

You get to work with very smart and engaged people. There are good opportunities and a culture of up-skilling, with plenty of resources for training and development.

    Cons

No real negatives have become apparent in my time here. There are the usual downsides to working in large open-plan offices.

    Advice to Management

Continue with focus on personal development and reward of individual contribution
