    Pros

Joplin is a small office with great people to work with. They take time to help when you are struggling and are just fun to work with.

    Cons

Tax season makes for some long hours but the people make it not so bad, plus during the tax season they always have food brought in on Saturday.

Great people to work with and many people close to your age. Opportunity to work in many different industries and opportunity for career advancement.

    Cons

Work life balance during busy season is not ideal, but it's not horrible.

    I worked at BKD full-time

    Pros

Lots of hard work, demanding clients

    Cons

Poor training, partners very hard to work with. Particularly those who "grew up" at BKD.

    Advice to Management

Need 360 degree feedback and need to coach partners who are abusive to staff.

I have been working at BKD full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Strong Core Values at company headquarters. Great leadership training opportunities. Good opportunities for outside CPE training.

    Cons

Poor leadership at the local office level. Lots of infighting. Poor teamwork. Terrible retention rate. No presence in the marketplace. Firm is virtually unheard of in Texas. Weakest link in the firm is at the Partner level. Run very much like a small, local firm. No vision. Very little talent, zero ambition.

    Advice to Management

Consider infusion into the firm from outside the Texas area. Insist that core values of the firm be respected. Insist on teamwork between professionals.

I have been working at BKD full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Fair pay
    Friendly staff
    Consultants don't travel much
Consultants don't have to work as much overtime as some other staff

    Cons

    No 401K match
Parking at the Springfield office is inconvenient
I would rather have earlier hours but have to work 8 to 5

    Advice to Management

    More flexible schedules
    More work from home opportunities

I have been working at BKD full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people I work with are nice and easy to get along with. Also, easy access to excellent technology, resources, training and CPE opportunities.

    Cons

Salary is low for the amount of work you do, no 401k match, and no bonus program. Also there is a clique- if you're in it your golden, if not you have to work twice as hard to get the same recognition.

    Advice to Management

Implement some type of bonus program. The base pay is fair for the area, but raises are small and there is no bonus potential. The economy is up, revenues are improving-- let some of those financial rewards flow to the people putting in the extra hours.

I worked at BKD full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Bonuses are awarded for passing your CPA exam and you are in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, so there are many dining options in walking distance. Some flexibility in work hours during non-peak season. IT is fantastic.

    Cons

You have to pay for your own parking at least a block away from the office. Earning your CPA is prioritized but you're given no time to earn it. Typical public accounting firm in that they burn out employees at every level all the time. HR was not helpful in any way.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to the reasons that employees cite for leaving the company. My feedback went straight into a folder in some file cabinet and was never read by anyone in charge of hiring/supervising my replacement.

I have been working at BKD full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

My supervisors genuinely care about me and my career and want to see me being challenged and able to grow. They take time to get to know you and develop you as a person.

    Cons

Structure is rigid, not a lot of opportunity to distinguish yourself early in your career. Lots of focus on keeping costs low. There is encouragement for work/life balance, but there is a lot of travel involved which limits that. Employees do not receive any type of health club benefits aside from a discount at the local Y. Low salary compared to other firms.

    Advice to Management

Join the 21st century. Make sure people are enthused about their jobs. Consider the things that are important to them.
