I worked at BMC Software (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay and bennies while you work there
    Ability to work from home
You will be able to leave someday if the job doesn't kill you first

    Cons

Company is a nightmare to work for if you are someone who actually does the work that is at the heart of what generates Sales to include development, tech support, order processing etc, then they make it very difficult for you. Constant layoffs of these types of jobs to ship overseas, but they hire many upper level execs.

If you are not in Houston, you basically don't exist until it is time to lay you off.

    Advice to Management

Narrow down the product lines, but keep the existing people to devote to those products.
Get a clue as to what it actually takes to produce and support the products
    Kill the culture of elitism.

I have been working at BMC Software full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

If you like Donald Trump, this is the place for you. His style is what BMC execs would consider nuanced and sophisticated.

    Cons

Most of the executive team appears to have graduated from Donald Trump university. There's a reason why this company is dying.

    Advice to Management

A more ridiculous group of execs is hard to find. So no advice for them.

I worked at BMC Software full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Houston Campus is nice & decent people do work there. Although most have been laid off.

    Cons

Terrible management. Since being taken private it has been downhill. It's all about slashing jobs and improving the sacred finance metrics. The PE group that owns the company will take public again in a few years so get ready for another big shake up. For the close to 4 years I worked there the bonuses never paid out fully like I was initially told it would. Good luck getting a raise there too...

    Advice to Management

The PE group owns you so not much you can do except keep slashing jobs and pad that golden parachute.

I worked at BMC Software full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Nice Office. Excellent pay.

    Cons

Horrible, horrible abusive culture. I could not get out fast enough. Pay is high for a reason. Managers bully and threaten employees into submission. Everyone is paranoid.

    Advice to Management

Not sure what to say here. I don't see how BMC plans to be innovative when they beat up their engineers.

I have been working at BMC Software full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Former shell of the great company that it once was.

    Cons

Bloated Management - Ever growing and revolving door of high priced management.
Poor Communication - Lots of spin doctoring at each layer of management
Lack of Innovation - No real investment in product or people
Lack of Teamwork - Direct result of lack of leadership, coupled with attrition of top tier talent; cancerous subpar retreads are running amok driving their own agenda

    Advice to Management

Your employees are smarter than you give us credit for. You can't keep tell us we are doing well, yet we keep missing our comp plan targets every year. And in the same breath lay off individual contributors every quarter, while hiring more high priced leadership.

I have been working at BMC Software full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent market leading mainframe products. While other products are still string, they have fallen behind competitive products.

    Cons

Minimal innovation. Bloated platforms. Long time to invent and longer time to value.

    Advice to Management

Need to overhaul the management. A private company of BMC's size doesn't need 15+ members in the leadership team. No wonder nothing is getting done!

I worked at BMC Software full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Work from home is a great perk

    Cons

Almost every month there is a round of layoffs, some of this is because the software market has changed and BMC has not developed a strong Cloud or SaaS strategy yet. Most of it is because management struggles with basic concepts like accurate forecasts or establishing objectives to support strategic goals.

Middle management changes constantly, Director level or above has about a 1-2 year shelf life. There is no interest in pushing boundaries, everyone wants to cause as little fuss as possible and make little to no commitments to any measurable outcomes.

BMC has killed its partner channel, its professional services is hemorrhaging money and is primarily used to fix product defects. The company is still constrained by VSOE and SOX controls so although its privately held it behaves as if it still reports to the street every 3 months.

The core product family is based on 30 year old technology and there are literally hundreds of competing products (many of them free). The only strategic relationships it has are with aging companies like Dell or ones that take most of the profit from every transaction like Salesforce. There is so much overlap in product families between SMB and Enterprise lines that sales people don't know how to position their products. The only sales personnel the company can attract are inexperienced and the product lines are too complex to keep them engaged.

    Advice to Management

Its clear the company is going to shortly start packaging off the pieces that it was broken into. the new private equity ownership has sharply curtailed any discretionary expenses and the leadership that has been hired is a collection of average execs that couldn't make it at the Tier 1 or 2 tech companies

I have been working at BMC Software full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There are some talented, bright employees at BMC. Lots of opportunity to work extremely hard. Good location and free drinks - that is about it!

    Cons

Constant layoffs regardless of employee ability and dedication. Serial reorganizations without thinking through a strategic long term plan. Lack of cohesive strategy at the top and no wonder private equity took over.

    Advice to Management

All assets and attention are focused on the sales organization and support groups are only a necessary mechanism and are treated as such. The external reputation of BMC as a sweatshop and serial restructurer is fully supported based on what I have experienced. There is no opportunity for advancement unless you are a certain gender/race (yes, this is called discrimination). There is no employee development. The negative reputation you have generated in Houston is valid. The Bain comedy skit at the 2015 annual kick off meeting demonstrated exceptionally poor taste when you are in the midst of laying off even more employees.

I worked at BMC Software full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

good pay, good benefits, nice campus, good cafeteria, good on site gym / work out facility

    Cons

no work life balance, expected to put in long hours, no innovation....old MEN, old ideas.

    Advice to Management

get some young blood in this company. You are stale and so are your ideas. You move too slowly. You are affraid to innovate. You are a company of men....Women have powerful minds...learn to work with them. Leave your good-old-boy Texas mentalities behind..or get out...there is no place for this in Tech.
