I worked at BMC Software full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Work with a workforce worldwide

    Cons

BMC Software has turned from being a family to a group who dictates all actions, movements, and thought. Especially the SaaS group does not tolerate employees who free think for themselves. They micromanage every facet of every day. Working for this group is intolerable.

    Advice to Management

The best thing to do is eliminate all mid to upper management and start over with fresh blood.

I have been working at BMC Software full-time

    Pros

Flexible work from home opportunity, office space has lots of natural light, some stellar talent but not easy to find.

    Cons

Company avoids reality of competition, doesn't understand cloud, leadership says one thing WRT revenue and earnings but does not translate to bonus, bonus is consistently paid out at rock bottom, complete disconnect between functional business units.

    Advice to Management

Stop spinning and tell the truth.

I worked at BMC Software full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Some good people.

Good opportunity to delve deeper into managing Unix/Linux operating systems.

    Cons

They trimmed staff every year, even when results were good.

They were slowly and steadily off-shoring as much of the work as possible.

    Advice to Management

Please realize that there are unforeseen consequences to prioritizing cost and moving the work overseas. It will come back to bite you eventually.

I worked at BMC Software full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The products that they create are innovative and reliable. The compensation is good for the market.

    Cons

Senior leadership is inept. They are totally disconnected from the regular workers. The company has frequent layoffs which leave employees concerned for their jobs every day. Too many Directors and VPs in comparison to the number of employees.

    Advice to Management

Try to understand what the employees are doing on a day to day basis and listen to their input. Lower the number of high level directors and VPs so there wouldn't need to be so many layoffs of regular employees just to save money.

I have been working at BMC Software full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The employees have each others' backs and work collaboratively across organizational lines. There are many opportunities to move into different roles to broaden experience. There is a ton of innovation happening with the products as the company focuses on delivering a great user experience.

    Cons

Management. There are bright spots, but for the most part, the owners have placed dictatorially-minded bullies into leadership roles. They place unreasonable deadlines on staff and expect employees to give up their personal lives in order to meet those deadlines. And many have the "my-way-or-the-highway" mentality, which means employees are not encouraged to be creative, but are simply expected to follow orders. Long-time employees are heading for the doors and nobody seems to care.

    Advice to Management

Time to not only talk the talk, but walk the walk. Focus on the people and put leaders in place that people WANT to follow. You should NOT have leaders who bully, intimidate, and humiliate staff. This isn't a dictatorship or the military. It used to be a great place to work, but is now just a job.

I have been working at BMC Software as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

BMC has a great client base of Fortune 500 companies.

    Cons

    Pay is low
    People are scattered
    Teamwork is a foreign concept
    Departmental in-fighting is rampant
Respect for fellow workers is virtually none existant

    Advice to Management

Build better leadership and stop emphasizing doing everything for the lowest dollar point.

I worked at BMC Software full-time

    Pros

Decent salary. Some managers allow working from home. Work hours were flexible.

    Cons

Turned into a mega sweatshop before I left, but it was mainframe so YMMV. Heard it's turned even worse since they went private.

    Advice to Management

If you want to encourage employees to innovate you may want to actually fund new development with money rather than stolen resources from other projects.

    Pros

Reasonably competitive salary combined with remote work opportunities allows for some good flexibility when having a young family. Remote work options may be less welcome now than when I was there.

    Cons

BMC is an old-school bulky machine that pivots slowly. The company had recently been acquired when I was there and was trying to implement some change, but with many layers of management, what I was used to doing in 1-2 weeks at other companies took 5-6 weeks . Almost the entire demand marketing team has turned over since leaving. If you have an entrepreneurial nature, this is a tough place to work.

    Advice to Management

Walk the talk when saying you want to be more start-up in nature.

    Pros

    Excellent training opportunities for employees

    Cons

Absolutely terrible culture - teams pitted against each other in front of clients - terrible follow through with clients

    Advice to Management

Take care of your clients and remember we are all working for the same company
