I worked at BMC Software full-time

    Pros

I worked at BMC for almost 3 years. Company went through a substantial transformation, going from public to private. Great benefits and salary quite competitive.

    Cons

It is always a challenge when a company goes from publicly traded to privately held. Investors tend to cut corners to maximize their profit, which it is probably understandable.

    Advice to Management

    No particular advice.

I worked at BMC Software full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The products that they create are innovative and reliable. The compensation is good for the market.

    Cons

Senior leadership is inept. They are totally disconnected from the regular workers. The company has frequent layoffs which leave employees concerned for their jobs every day. Too many Directors and VPs in comparison to the number of employees.

    Advice to Management

Try to understand what the employees are doing on a day to day basis and listen to their input. Lower the number of high level directors and VPs so there wouldn't need to be so many layoffs of regular employees just to save money.

    Cons

    Pros

Great place to work. I had the opportunity to move from Europe to Canada with BMC and have been able to work in a few different roles within BMC since arriving in Canada
They really invest in coaching and continuous improvement and want to give you the tools to succeed

    Cons

A lot of changes at the start of each fiscal, but you learn to go with it and have to trust the direction the company is going in

I worked at BMC Software (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay and bennies while you work there
    Ability to work from home
You will be able to leave someday if the job doesn't kill you first

    Cons

Company is a nightmare to work for if you are someone who actually does the work that is at the heart of what generates Sales to include development, tech support, order processing etc, then they make it very difficult for you. Constant layoffs of these types of jobs to ship overseas, but they hire many upper level execs.

If you are not in Houston, you basically don't exist until it is time to lay you off.

    Advice to Management

Narrow down the product lines, but keep the existing people to devote to those products.
Get a clue as to what it actually takes to produce and support the products
    Kill the culture of elitism.

I have been working at BMC Software full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The employees have each others' backs and work collaboratively across organizational lines. There are many opportunities to move into different roles to broaden experience. There is a ton of innovation happening with the products as the company focuses on delivering a great user experience.

    Cons

Management. There are bright spots, but for the most part, the owners have placed dictatorially-minded bullies into leadership roles. They place unreasonable deadlines on staff and expect employees to give up their personal lives in order to meet those deadlines. And many have the "my-way-or-the-highway" mentality, which means employees are not encouraged to be creative, but are simply expected to follow orders. Long-time employees are heading for the doors and nobody seems to care.

    Advice to Management

Time to not only talk the talk, but walk the walk. Focus on the people and put leaders in place that people WANT to follow. You should NOT have leaders who bully, intimidate, and humiliate staff. This isn't a dictatorship or the military. It used to be a great place to work, but is now just a job.
