I have been working at BMC Software full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

If you like Donald Trump, this is the place for you. His style is what BMC execs would consider nuanced and sophisticated.

    Cons

Most of the executive team appears to have graduated from Donald Trump university. There's a reason why this company is dying.

    Advice to Management

A more ridiculous group of execs is hard to find. So no advice for them.

I have been working at BMC Software full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent market leading mainframe products. While other products are still string, they have fallen behind competitive products.

    Cons

Minimal innovation. Bloated platforms. Long time to invent and longer time to value.

    Advice to Management

Need to overhaul the management. A private company of BMC's size doesn't need 15+ members in the leadership team. No wonder nothing is getting done!

    Pros

Technology is interesting and challenging to learn. The benefits and salary are above average.

    Cons

The atmosphere is ridiculously political and filled with pompous primadonnas. Most of the employees take themselves much too seriously and management is frightenly cut throat!

Many in management who have no concept of the "real" world as they've spent their entire lives working for BMC.

    Advice to Management

Never, ever, elicit personal information from an employee on the pretext of "helping them with their career development." I made the mistake of being open with my manager (on her repeated insistence) about a communication weakness that I wanted to work on only to have her turn around and fire me on the basis of the so-called "weakness."

Don't betray your employees even if you're looking to justify a lay-off! It's really bad karma...bad juju...

    Pros

Lot's of good sales training and broad product portfolio. Got to spend a lot of money trying to sell customers on a good time rather than reliable technology.

    Cons

Too many layers of management, lack of executive communication with employees and no value add to the process. Sales Directors are more interested in managing up and throwing their subordinates under the bus. The products didn't work. There was constant turnover and therefore no sense of team work working towards the common cause.

    Advice to Management

Clean up the mess and invest more in Automation

    Pros

Great job security as long as you keep your head down and do your work and wait for bonus to get paid without expecting any job advancement.

    Cons

No place to advance one's career.

    Advice to Management

Rather than holding employees retained with attractive bonus plan pay them competitive salaries and let them work hard for it.

    Pros

I have a feeling that if you work in one of the company's two main offices, located in Texas or India, the meeting times may be more manageable.

    Cons

I'd heard about blame-storming, but I had never experienced it before being hired at BMC. If you know how to function in that kind of environment, go for it. I would also tell any new hire at BMC to talk to a trusted HR person to help them keep track of all the information that would be necessary to form a case for why your being fired is inappropriate. I would say set aside a good hour per day to devote to your note takings -- your management is doing this so should you be.

After working there, I had several recruiters comment that BMC has a habit of calling meetings that you must attend. The example given was a meeting notice that went out at about 5pm on the day a person was leaving for vacation, for a mandatory 6-7pm meeting. It was presented as a pervasive corporate habit.

    Advice to Management

The in fighting and lack of employee satisfaction are affecting overall product quality.

    Pros

good products - good product strategy

    Cons

Terrible Sales Management - Sales People go to BMC to die - It is a place for order takers not sales people. Bladelogic management is not customer focused - it is only about making a sale.
Poor compensation. Not real smart people especially in sales management. If you want to be No. 1 in your lower division math class - this is the place for you !

    Advice to Management

    try selling Cutco Knifes

    Pros

good products and a good overall solution

    Cons

sales people and sales management are some of the worst I have ever come across. The sales management team is very weak, highly political. It is a Houston based technology company so how many good technology companies have come out of Houston. The upper sales management is really bad. Putting a Bladelogic guy in with his posse won't help - too many bad managers in between. It is worst on the west coast. The management team has run out more good sales people because it is so bad.
Compensation is OK so in a way you get what you pay for. They are also known for not paying sales people commisions.

    Advice to Management

get rid of all the sales managers and VP's and start with a new team.
