      Pros

      Cons

On occasion, it can be hard to work with some teams, but I don't know of any workplace that doesn't have this issue.

      Horrible benefits

      Pros

The people are smart and nice but like anywhere else, egos run strong.

      Cons

There is a deep level of respect from coworkers in Canada and how they engage and work with Chicago colleagues. There is a “better than” northern attitude that is felt during meetings. The Canadian HR leadership team is almost 100% white women. Where is the diversity? - the health benefits package they provide in the US is expensive and the worst I’ve seen. If you are negotiating for a job at BMO in the US, add about $5k additional to accommodate the deductible and out of pocket max you will need to pay. Also, your benefits will only start during the open enrollment period so if you start mid-year, you’ll need to wait until EOY to get coverage. - There are a lot of technical issues with laptop connectivity, updates and with corporate cell phones. The help desk is unqualified and never resolves issues. You’ll spend 45 minute on hold, 45 minutes allowing them to problem solve and then them saying they can’t future it out so issues are escalated for another date. It’s apparent that BMO doesn’t want to spend too much money investing in good health coverage for US colleagues or excellent tech support for everyone. Where is all there money going to then?

      Poor compensation for work

      Pros

The company overall does seem to care for their employees.

      Cons

As a teller you are required to push sales (70% of your performance rating) even though they claim we are only supposed to help the customer through “wholistic conversations”. Even if you reach 100% of your goal for the quarter or get over that you are VERY poorly compensated for the amount of sales you created that they pushed for.

Decent but definitely a conservative/traditional place

Apr 27, 2021 - Associate in Chicago, IL

      Pros

Pay is ok, work is normally not too demanding but sometimes weekends or late hours have to be worked.

      Cons

Management is stuck in the past and resistant to change although they pretend they aren’t by touting culture and whatever slogan of the year it happens to be. WFH or remote work is frowned upon (except when mandatory due to covid restrictions). Promotions come at very set times and there’s not much to do to differentiate. Overall it has never been a place I enjoy working, it’s just pretty boring work, but it’s an OK job.

      Retail Relationship Banker - Wisconsin

Apr 19, 2021 - Retail Banker, BMO HARRIS BANK in Milwaukee, WI
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Good base pay, and opportunity for commission. Fairly good benefits.

      Cons

Outdated systems and technology, makes it hard to do your daily job. Company likes to cut costs frequently, which results in poor service quality such as mortgage servicer - DMI. High sales focus. Management is often more worried about making sales calls than servicing the customers that are actually in front of you.
