I worked at BMO Harris Bank (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits, especially the 401k plan.

    Cons

Right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing.
Everything is run out of the corporate office in Chicago vs. each local market. Not all markets are like Chicago!

    Advice to Management

Empower the local management teams to make more decisions appropriate for their individual market areas.

I worked at BMO Harris Bank full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Excellent benefits & Student reimbursement

    Cons

SALES! SALES! That's basically what most of the banks focus on. So if you are not good at sales don't expect to move up.

    Advice to Management

Stay professional and look at peoples work ethics and not so much on sales. Not everyone needs a CC

I worked at BMO Harris Bank full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

BMO Harris matched up to 5% for 401k, three weeks paid vacation, 80 hours of sick time, short-term and long-term disability, adoption assistance, benefits for same-sex partners-- one of the most progressive in terms of benefits. Most co-workers I encountered were friendly, personable, and formed sincere friendships.

    Cons

Consistently short-staffed because upper management tends to eliminate or lower the hours for a full-time replacement (my service manager position was reduced to a 30hr PT teller), service line maintains most of the branch operations, wear many hats, expected to service customers, complete branch audits, meet and exceed sales goals, and are compensated far less than bankers. Sales have become the main priority over service-- branch is expected to report all their numbers, voice calls, future appointments on a daily basis and must have an impromptu call night to make up any difference. Upper management picks and chooses which people to interview for open positions, rather than opening requisition and allowing employees to apply-- they lower morale by limiting promotion opportunities and cherry pick those who can sell. What made me leave my position was the lack of opportunities and new management.

    Advice to Management

Get to know your employees and focus on their strengths, work with them to reach their goals, inspire them to seek higher. Be a mentor, not a dictator.

I worked at BMO Harris Bank (More than a year)

    Pros

The benefits of the company are actually amazing and good for someone who is just starting in the career world.

    Cons

So much of the work here is driven by making the company bigger but the real issue is that too many people still have no idea who BMO Harris Bank really is!

    Advice to Management

Focus on team work and building the company in other ways than harassing customers.

    Pros

Easy company to get to know your coworkers; employee benefits are good.

    Cons

Compensation for "low-level" employees is very unfair, especially in comparison to the bankers and other workers in the branch.

    Advice to Management

Consider restructuring the compensation plan and salary system for service employees.
