    Negative Outlook

I worked at BMT Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Small wholly owned subsidiary of large multinational corporation. You have the benefits of a large corporation, and the closeness of small business

    Cons

Small government consulting company, living from contact to contract. Business base is not large enough to provide real employment stability

    Advice to Management

Seek Corporate (BMT) support for funding growth, and limit focus on profit for the next few years.

I worked at BMT Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Open door policy directly to the President of BMT Designers & Planners.
I would have stayed for a long time if not for a company layoff due to a contract ending. Even at the end of my group's contract, I was moved to a different division for almost 6 months. The company did not have to do that. This is a first rate organization

    Cons

Department of Defense consulting and contracting can be tough in the lean times.

    Advice to Management

Continue developing the staff level peope. This is a great place to work.

    Cons

The growth of the company depends on the budget of the federal goverment

    Advice to Management

Keep it up. Make sure all employees are payed what they are worth

Flexible work schedule and opportunity to take time off when it is desired.

    Cons

No respect from senior management. Lack of communication between senior management and the rest of the company.

Better understand your employees capabilities and use that to work for the company.

    Pros

Supportive of training and individual employee goals. Provided opportunities for employees to grow and continue education.

    Cons

Being part of a larger foreign owned company presents some challenges to government contracting - difficult to compete with smaller companies that have less overhead.

    Advice to Management

Be open about what's going on with contracts - don't tell staff things like "the client likes us, therefore they will choose us". It's a very naive way to operate and staff see through it.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at BMT Group full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good pay, nice colleagues, good investment in IT infrastructure and equipment.

Nice to have internal company updates every month.

    Good standards implementation.

    Cons

Bad management - never have had any time for people development. String people along with zero communication and no care or compassion.

Useless interview technique - subsidiary didn't utilize centralized professional HR personnel.

No emphasis on HSSE that is so important and is so prevalent in other engineering companies.

If you're face won't fit into any of the following: Male, white, straight, educated in Southampton University, Southampton Solent University, Yacht design and Production, Small Boat design or Ship Science - don't bother applying.

    Advice to Management

Management shouldn't employ people who fit their own mould. i.e. seemingly everyone is at least one of a few things: Male, white, straight, educated in Southampton University, Southampton Solent University, Yacht design and Production or Ship Science - therefore no diversity of thought. Ok, it is Naval Architect company and yes the courses are important but some variety would be nice.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at BMT Group full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company has a great work environment; the people are friendly, management is accessible, the company encourages and supports monthly and annual social events. Being part of an employee owned company means that employees are more aware of the financial and business reality, both current and forward-looking. It also provides an additional bonus each year and provides opportunities to work abroad with other BMT Group companies.

    Cons

In recent years, the company has becomes very defense focused, very risk adverse, and also very focused on the very front end of project work, meaning helping the client develop requirements and SOWs and RFPs, rather than the more technical-oriented design and analysis it did in the past. This means that where Fleet used to do all sorts of unique projects for a diversity of clients, it now focuses on very large support contracts from clients like DND and CCG instead. So you may find yourself working on the same government project for years, instead of a different project every few months.

    Advice to Management

Strive for more diversity. Accept that sometimes a greater risk is necessary to provide employees with fun, interesting, and challenging work. Realize that while steady, reliable work may be the end game for the company as a whole, it is not enough for the day-to-day worker who needs to be excited about the work they do.
