I worked at BNSF Railway full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good salary and benefits.

    Cons

Very toxic and political work environment. Your opinion is not valued and you are nothing more than a number.

    Advice to Management

Actually listen to your employees. Stop the pointless games and backstabbing.

I have been working at BNSF Railway full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It'll definitely pay the bills, put the kids thru college, and let you have disposable income, if you manage your money right.

    Cons

You will have no schedule what so ever. If someone asks you if you'll be off next weekend for a BBQ, your response will be "I'll let you know that morning". Dr.'s appointments? Good luck. Baseball games, anniversaries, birthdays, ya right. That's where the prepare to be single part comes in. It takes a strong person to stay in a relationship with a railroader.

    Advice to Management

Grow some ethics. Take safety serious all the time, not only when it's convenient for you, or when business is slow and management is trying to justify their jobs by testing.

I worked at BNSF Railway full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

People are willing to help you learn and there are a lot of opportunities to change jobs within the company

    Cons

I was not paid a competitive salary and the company is drastically cutting costs, which has impacted the work environment. It is a very quiet and uptight atmosphere.

    Advice to Management

Reward the people who work hard

I have been working at BNSF Railway full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Above average pay, good benefits

    Cons

management loves to mess with employees, no home-life, no more overtime with all the budget cuts and thousands of furloughs throughout all divisions

    Advice to Management

Forecast better!!! I am a furloughed Conductor, turned furloughed MOW worked, turn furloughed Structures employee...meanwhile you have thousands of guys still furloughed while upper management makes insane salaries and bonuses.

    Pros

Good pay, health care, and retirement benefits.

    Cons

Don't get much time off with having to work holidays and starting out with 10 vacation days. So basically besides your weekend days you get 10 other days off a year and that's it.

Good pay, benefits are pretty comparable to other large corporations.

I worked at BNSF Railway full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There are A LOT of hard working folks in the field. At HQ, not so much. But that is everywhere right.

    Cons

On call 24/7 and not compensated for it.

    Advice to Management

LTIP does the company a lot of good, huh?

I worked at BNSF Railway full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You don't have to work very much because you aren't responsible for anything. you will be told everything you need to do daily (sometimes hourly). All you really have to do is repeat the safety mantra whenever anybody is listening and you'll be good to go.

    Cons

You make less than those who (theoretically) report to you and your benefits package is considerably more expensive than any of the hourly workers in your company. Status quo is the only way that anybody at BNSF is interested in doing things. you will hear "we've been doing this for 125 years this way, we aren't going to change anytime soon" and they will be right. Cutting edge technology at the railroad is a computer and a cell phone. Forget about anything created after 1987.

I worked at BNSF Railway full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Money and an occasional piece of fruit. Like how you would reward a lab monkey.

    Cons

No life. Your kids don't matter, your health doesn't matter, your dog doesn't matter, and your dying mother doesn't matter. No balance. No quality of life. No excuses. It's a dangerous job and they push you to your physical and mental limits. Lineups are brutal. Plan on being awake 24 plus hours, more times than not.

    Advice to Management

Need to promote from the ranks and learn how to spell. Try gaining some experience first. McDonalds is hiring. Like you tell us.
