I have been working at BPR Properties (CA) (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The changes that have been rolled out in the past 8 months have been needed and positive. I feel that the company is heading in the right direction and is quickly becoming one of the better places to work.

    Cons

There is a bit of history to move beyond and some current and former coworkers may not trust that. Also, making this dramatic of a positive change does not happen overnight, but certain decisions need (and can) be made faster.

    Pros

I have no pros to share.

    Cons

I was part of the opening team for one of their hotels. I had worked in corporate hospitality for 15 years prior, and this was by far the worst company and poorest management I've ever encountered.

    Advice to Management

I hope you are making some positive changes, because you desperately need it.

  7. ""New" Executive Management Made it Even Worse"

    Pros

The operational staff are some of the best people I have ever worked with.
    The hotels are beautiful.
    The food is fantastic.

    Cons

All of the best talent is gone. They were either let go or were smart enough to leave on their own.
They do not value talent. They claim to be trying harder to be a better company, then hold this idiotic meeting about the new vision and the new culture while bragging to everyone how rich they are. The owners have brought in new executive corporate management that have done nothing but push out the people that made the hotels the success they are. BPR hotels are successful. Not because of BPR but in spite of them. The corporate HR department is a joke and that trickles down to the property level. Several executive committee members have left specifically because of the inadequacy of HR. When speaking with one of the staff the HR representative said this employee wasn't liked because of where they were raised. When the director of HR makes statements like that, where is a person to turn? The ownership has put all their faith in the new executive allowing him to bring in people he has worked with in the past. It is very concerning that all of these people were available to come and work. They were all unemployed (or consultants, fancy word for unemployed). A corporate employee forged the signature of one of my colleagues on a tax document. The corporate employee was not reprimanded or disciplined, my colleague however was reprimanded for the actions of the corporate employee and later pushed out. The ownership insists on outrageous unattainable revenue budgets, then holds the sales department accountable. There are just so many things wrong with this company, I could go on forever.

Bottom line, they think they are making it better, they aren't. They have no clue. No grasp on reality. They have entrusted their entire operation to one man that is clueless and their head of finance is beholden to the head of operations for her job. Poor business choices.

If you are considering working for this company, look at how many upper management positions are available. Look at how much turn around they have had in the past year when they are allegedly trying harder to make things better.

I mentor a lot of college students studying hospitality management. When they are getting ready to graduate, or come to me for letters of recommendation, the first thing I say to them, "Don't ever apply or consider BPR Properties. It is the biggest mistake of your career."

    Advice to Management

The owners need to really look at why all their senior management on property level is leaving. Take a good look at your corporate executive team.

I have been working at BPR Properties (CA) (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Beautiful hotel placed in downtown Berkeley.
Some nice, friendly and competent people work there, but usually don't stick around too long.
Owners are nice, but unfortunately out of the loop for the problems in this hotel.

    Cons

Like most of the other real reviews point out, the ownership really have no clue how bad things are at the HSP. I have been working in the industry for more than 15 years and more than 5 years at this location, and I have never, ever been in such an unorganized and messy place ran by amateur managers. Thanks God is not my full-time job.
They management is lacking the leadership skills, and the ability to listen and acknowledged issues, and are reluctant to changes. Problem areas are overlooked and ignored, hoping that no one will noticed them.
Working there have allowed me to see what areas can be improved and how, but whenever I suggested a new action plan to the department manager, I was reassured that there are no problems and nothing needed to be changed. As a result, same mistakes have been repeated for years and therefore business is declining.
The lack of communication between departments is astonishing, making the work for their employees a nightmare.
There are many good, capable people that work there, but they don't last long. Therefore, the high turn over.
Even though there some doubtful positive reviews, his place does not deserve even one star.

    Advice to Management

Most of the issues in this hotel come from the department managers, but my advice will not be addressed to the management, because they won't listen and will downplay the issues, but rather to the ownership of the company. If you want to have a successful company, you need to develop a strong team of Department, and General Managers for your hotels, particularly for the SHP, even if you have to pay more. It will be well worth it in the long run.

    Pros

Some very nice people work there, but they tend not to stay long.

    Cons

Administratively this place is a mess. Processes are deeply broken and ownership has no clue how bad things are, or what it takes to fix them. If you bring up an issue needing attention you will get lip service and empty promises but when it comes to actually dedicating resources to fixing problems the company will invariably opt to just tell everyone to work harder. They are big on high expectations but not so much on providing the tools to achieve them. There is no amount of dedication, talent, enthusiasm and hard work that will overcome the dysfunctionality of this organization. Company policies are inconsistently enforced according to the whim of management. Don’t work for this company if you have other options.

    Advice to Management

    Get some integrity.

Change can be difficult and growth presents new challenges so need to be open to finding solutions.
