A Fantastic Place To Work
Oct 17, 2022 - Software Engineer in Bath, MIRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
They treat their employees like family. Lots of amenities that make the office a comfortable place to work. Flexible with remote work. Generous benefits, compensation, and advancement based on merit. Poised to dominate their market within the coming years.
Cons
Slightly aged technology stack. Soda machine occasionally runs out of cherry coke.

Very satisfying place to work!
Dec 12, 2011 - Software Support in Bath, MIRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
From top to bottom the owners/management have grown the business at a steady and manageable pace. They have always been pro-active and not re-active to company growth. This has allowed the company to maintain it's high level of customer support and satisfaction, while continually growing year after year. There are many pluses, including a relaxed work environment, casual yet professional. Excellent benefits; including health, dental, and vision. Regular reviews that let employees know where they stand, and come with bonuses tied to performance. A great 401k with company matching, plus an extra profit sharing contribution to your 401k at years end. Impromptu Friday cookouts, a pop machine, and a theater style popcorn popper round out just some of the perks. A family feel and comfortable work environment give BS&A a huge edge over many places I have worked in the past. Walk past an owner in the hallway you're as likely to stop for a short chat as your are your cube-mates.
Cons
Communication within the company has improved, but can sometimes still be lacking. While it's getting better, it will still need a little work as the company continues to grow within, and outside of Michigan. While you will almost always know what's going on in your immediate area of responsibility, sometimes communication between areas could use a little boost.

Pros
I tried to think of something positive to say about working here, but I couldn't think of a single thing.
Cons
I don't understand most of the reviews here. The atmosphere is not family-oriented. It is FAKE, FAKE, FAKE. It's all about fitting in with the culture and getting in good with the partners. If you aren't liked and play all the games, you're done. The salary isn't competitive, it's well below industry average. The thing that most of the reviews neglect to mention is that the greater Lansing area has virtually NO high tech jobs at all. People like working here because it beats unemployment. I've also heard the "BS&A is SO much better than big corporate America" argument, too. That is because no one else writes municipal software. As soon as a decent competitor enters the market, this company is in trouble. This place operates with sweat-shop mentality. They expect everything to be Nazi-perfect or they will fire you without warning. I personally saw this when I worked there. There is NO compassion, NO second chances, and NO help. These people DO NOT CARE who they use, hurt, or destroy. This company, like most of the state, is natives only. If you're not from Michigan, you won't understand the culture, will be thought weird because you're not from here, and will see how closed-minded and bigoted people from this area really are.

Fantastic Company with Outstanding Growth Potential
Oct 22, 2012 - Technical Support and Implementation Specialist in Bath, MIRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
* The pay is very competitive for full-time employees and the benefits package is AMAZING! Internships are also paid with a chance to become a full-time employee at the end of the internship. * The work atmosphere is very laid back but everyone remains focused on doing their job and doing it well. * The Owners treat the employees VERY well with bonuses, raises, cook-outs, Christmas parties and Summer parties. * The potential for growth as an employee is also a key Pro. Each day you are presented with opportunities to take on new projects and assert yourself in new ways. Managers notice when you take the extra effort to help out and tackle new projects and the compensation is very nice!
Cons
* As the company continues to grow with new clients, new employees are needed. Therefore the training program needs to be buffed a little. As a current employee, I can state that this area is very actively being worked on so that future interns are provided with a very informative and helpful training program to help them learn the various software programs.

Pros
Nice office decor and setup Decent up to date equipment, they give you what you need Friendly and knowledgeable support staff
Cons
The scope of project was completely misrepresented, indeed lied about. It was 2-3x what was described in the interview process. Extremely low pay given proportional to what the total scope of my task was -- they paid me low because I had very little experience, but expected me to do something that only a seasoned employee of several years would know how to do. I asked for help, and I received next to none. I was expected to work 60, 70, 80 hours a week until the job was done. I was never asked about if the time frame was feasible (and it wasn't), I was just pushed and bullied by one of the partners, as if that was supposed to be a motivating factor. I see there are a few others that have experienced the same ordeal with this company. I don't know if they got rid of that partner and things just became better or what, but this was a horrible confidence-shattering ordeal that I wish I never went through.

Pros
From my first day here, I felt welcomed into a warm and friendly family. I showed my dedication and worked hard, which did not go unnoticed. There were acknowledgements that were not only given at the time of my annual reviews; they were given through the year. If you have any ideas and/or questions they are responded and answered. It has been portrayed that everyone in our company is important and that makes a great company. Not only am I reflected in my work but that is also reflected for this company and I believe my co-workers and I take pride in what we do every day to make this company stand out. Not a lot of people can say that they enjoy coming to work every day but I am glad that I am one of those people!
Cons
Lines of communication between management and employees were laxed but I have seen them improve significantly in the last year.

Pros
I wish I had something positive to say about working here. They seemed friendly enough in the interviewing process and promised big things. Once I signed on the dotted line, everything changed and it was a nightmare.
Cons
- Long hours (12+ a day + weekends) - Low pay -- 15K below what I was really worth. Since this was my first job, I naively took it thinking I would get paid in experience -- BIG MISTAKE. - Rude, aggressive, management that tries to bully and intimidate you - Policies not laid out, you have to read minds and be totally in sync with what these people expect - Politics and cronyism to a cancerous degree The time table on my project was suddenly cut in half without any explanation given. I was already working 60 hours a week. Apparently, this wasn't enough and the partner assigned to "mentor" me accused me of lying to him, questioned my integrity, and personally insulted me to try to bully and squeeze more productivity out of me. I never understood the underhandedness or two-faced approach to running a company, but these people have it down to a science.

Not as great as others would have you believe
Oct 28, 2012 - Anonymous Employee in Bath, MIRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
This small team of developers, support staff, marketing, and sales is largely word-of-mouth. The software products are of good quality and support is extremely good -- this is the mission of the company, to be there for the customer.
Cons
Working there, however wasn't good at all. It was a lot of long hours (nights, weekends), the pay was 12K below industry average, and one of the partners was an arrogant, pompous jerk and a nightmare to work for. The responsibilities were not well laid out, and I kept getting more and more work without any help whatsoever. I know this was probably the breaking in, or hazing period, but it got to be beyond ridiculous. A small fraction of what I was expected to do was explained in the interview, and it was a lot of "oh by the way..." after I started. Most others on this forum will flame me for my post, vehemently defending BS&A and trying to poke holes in every word I write, but I had a severely negative experience at BS&A and would never consider working there again.
