I worked at BSO full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The BSO is one of the world's best orchestras (musically), without a doubt - great way to experience a lot of good music and gain a behind-the-scenes insight of a top tier arts org. My team was an amazing, talented group of people.

    Cons

The BSO is siloed to the point of no return, with projects conflicting across the board and communications limited to a select few in senior mgmt. My team's work (education) was not a priority, and our programs were underfunded and yet expected for the purposes of PR and grants

    Advice to Management

My advice would be to broaden your definition of what makes an orchestra great - the music is of course important to success, but the people working behind it should be given a voice and an opportunity to promote the brand beyond a profit-driven set of initiatives

I have been working at BSO full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It is a very friendly environment, people are very easy to work with. Some departments, like Fundraising, are really advanced in their methods, compared to similar organizations. The benefits are really good and you can get free tickets to concerts that are not sold out.

    Cons

The salary is good for a non for profit, however it is on the lower side overall, as compared with other organizations.

    Advice to Management

They should more careful with the people that gets promoted, sometimes when a manager leaves they people promoted is not really ready for their new role.

    Pros

The atmosphere and co-workers are both top notch - challenging, supportive, and fun. And there is no better place to hear classical music then at Symphony Hall - the acoustics are so rich and full of life, that each note is magical. My department head and direct supervisor were both talented and supportive and allowed me to take on as much responsibility as I could handle at each stage of the learning process.

    Cons

It's a non-profit, so the pay is not very great - this was a base + commission position, so there was the ability to increase pay through extraordinary effort, but as a newcomer I was not getting the best leads available. The best leads, naturally, went to those who put in their service for several years. When I secured a full time job during the day, in the accounting field, I asked to switch to the Ushering staff because I just could not sit at a desk, staring at a computer for 14 hours a day. The head of the department helped me secure that new position without hesitation.

    Advice to Management

I am not qualified to give advise to those who are so much more qualified and better informed than I am.

I worked at BSO (Less than a year)

    Pros

Everyone I worked with at Tanglewood was unique, friendly, extremely capable and hard working.
Most employees and musicians were driven to bring excellent music performances to the public, and succeeded.
New conductor Andris Nelsons brings some fresh air to the scene.

    Cons

Work-life balance is difficult, though this seems to be typical in most arts management positions.
Could be more room for alternative programming, not just classical.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work.

    - hearing concerts for free
    - easy job

    Cons

    - front of house management is fond of micro-managing, and is pompous and overbearing
    - no guaranteed hours
    - very strange shift scheduling
    - idiotic work attire
    - no communication skills to speak of
    - no incentive to stay with high turnover rate
    - front of house management is ungraceful and ungrateful to employees

    Advice to Management

I worked at BSO full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They offer great health benefits, as you get the same insurance options that the musicians get. Staff also have access to free tickets to the BSO, which I encourage you to take advantage of, as the orchestra is second to none. You also get to work alongside talented, hard-working colleagues.

    Cons

I had a positive experience. As in all organizations, some departments are better than others. Depending on where your office is located, it can be noisy when there are concerts during the day as the audiences filter in and out.
