I have been working at BT full-time

    Pros

BT does hire nice people. Co-workers are excellent, and very nice folks:

    Cons

Quotas are unachievable; products are obsolete, pedestrian and overpriced. I would say 1 out of 4 people achieves quota. At quota BT pays specialists above market, but don't worry, you won't hit quota. You have to hit all of 4 different numbers to get accelerators. Don't worry, you won't. Even if by some miracle you hit every milestone and quota, bt can (and will) take money away because they don't want to pay you that much. Plain and simple.
Also. Bt doesn't promote. They'll hire some stuffed shirt for you to report to. Likely a British male.

    Advice to Management

Stop focusing Solely on divisional profit. Margins are high enough, and the products are overpriced according to the market. Operations is cut to the bone so they are clearly very profitable. Start hiring Ops people so they can actually deliver what was sold.

I have been working at BT (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Telecommuting, depending on line manager.

    Cons

Very poor planning and methodology in terms of reporting and requirements. For the past year expectations have been severely unreasonable, multiple last-minute requests, and all urgent.

Recent offshoring immensely decreased employee morale and those teams have been unable to deliver quality work. In certain positions you are expected to be "on call", as we have to report to UK, so hours are long.

Two years in a row with none to minimal bonus payout (except for C-level). Upside is that every year around bonus time we get taken out to the parking lot go have hot dogs & burgers, so there is that.

Salaries are around 15% below market.

I have to agree with other reviews that since going to an open environment to "stimulate collaboration", everyone seems to be less enthusiastic about going in to the office. Maybe it has been this way for a while, now we just get to see it more often.

    Advice to Management

Advice to management is pointless. This has been provided via internal surveys for years and nothing is taken into account. If they don't consider internal advice, why would they even read this?

    Pros

Benefit package is good, especially the starting vacation / personal / and sick time you have starting on day 1

    Cons

the constant moving of jobs across the country and aroung the world, as they are finding out that outsourcing, even to BT employees in another country, does have communicatoin limitations

    Advice to Management

keep all employees in the loop and you should be able to have a loyal workforce. Acknowledge that competition is fierce.

I have been working at BT full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

They are good about allowing work from home a few times per week which is great.

    Cons

There is a growing lack of direction and sense of being a part of something. A company this size is hard to work for when you are someone who likes to get things done quickly and move on.

    Advice to Management

There was an initiative called "space to lead" - too bad it was never implemented as that is what is needed today. There are way too many things that need sign off at very high levels which delays getting things done. Also, they seem only interested in short term gains which often is at the expense of longer term success. Penny wise and pound foolish.

I have been working at BT full-time

    Pros

Great people who seem to like a challenge as it is very hard to get anything done effectively. Can work from home.

    Cons

There is a feeling of an anti American sentiment that runs throughout upper management. Business and market decisions get made out of the UK for the US with no practical experience understanding the impact of those decisions. The recent reorganization has integrated BT Conferencing with BT Global Services and as a result, the BT Conferencing brand is going away and the business will eventually go to the competition. A combination of these and other issues has created a toxic environment making it hard to remain positive.

    Advice to Management

Although they don't or won't read this space, they should let the US run their business out of the US with people who have the authority to make real business decisions.

I have been working at BT full-time

    Pros

Mediocre benefits and a cheap travel policy. Not much anything else that is positive. New office in Irving with no covered parking so enjoy the heat and hail!

    Cons

As others on this review board have pointed out, management is horrible. Only positive for UK British bloats. If you’re not one, stay away! Very weird culture if you are not in the clique so proceed with caution. Open space environment where there is no privacy. Everyone looks miserable and counting down the hours each day to escape. Management is clueless and only in their positions due to the culture. Toxic environment. Avoid at all costs.

    Advice to Management

    Go back to the UK.
