I worked at BT full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Experience - I learned a lot from working here for ten years. From various jobs in management to learning and development.

Holiday/vacation time - if you're in the US you will likely never have a job with this much vacation time right off the bat.

Global company - Fun working with/visiting people in different sites.

    Cons

Pay - pay your employees a wage comparable to others in the same industry. Raises are hit or miss. I've seen an 8.5% raise to a 1.0% and had the same rating.

Unattainable goals - you are rated on a five point scale. The 5 is completely unattainable, don't bother asking how to get there, you'll only be met with blank stares or your manager trying to dodge the question. Be happy with your 3.

Wrong people/wrong place - some of the managers need to be sacked... immediately. They couldn't manage a team if it saved their life and watching them try is either comical or extremely frustrating.

HR - we get you have to follow policy, but use some tact. Telling someone I need to be able to understand and deliver your quarterly review of an employee in case you get hit by a bus a die the next day could have been stated a bit more appropriately. She is like the SS and any minute that trigger can and will be pulled.

    Advice to Management

Go back to the time when you cared about your employees. You can still drive a strong direction towards improving the bottom line while balancing employee satisfaction.

Allow for promotions outside of the UK for upper management positions. Allowing for employee growth and development means retaining your talent so they don't have to leave to find it elsewhere.

I worked at BT (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people are really nice, and the company provides decent benefits. Employees have the opportunity to work and collaborate with people from around the globe.

    Cons

Some of the pricing and ordering systems are needlessly complicated.

    Advice to Management

Integrate the numerous tools that perform the same task. Get out of the way of some of your good employees.

I have been working at BT full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Global opportunities and size. Financially strong, it has a good reputation and international coverage

    Cons

Business culture too rigid, not an agile company, broken processes

    Advice to Management

A service-oriented company cannot be run as a bank. We are going to an identity crisis in several regional markets, with deep disconnects between Sales-Portfolio-Operations

    Pros

Great team of people, very considerate.

    Cons

No vision for a consulting company. Totally top-down, with little interaction with the consultants doing the work.

    Advice to Management

Management are constantly having the employees take surveys. Listen to your employees.

I have been working at BT full-time

    Pros

    Some folks can telecommute
access to global teams and opportunities to try different things
pay is on par with most consulting companies

    Cons

horrible benefits ("disaster insurance" only, with high deductibles and the need to sock away money in an HSA. a miserable start to each year)
awful secrecy with upper managers, and frequent reorgs which don't really solve anything

    Advice to Management

If you think reorganization (2 times a year or more!) is the solution, you don't understand the problem

I have been working at BT full-time

    Pros

There is a lot of training available if you build the right relationships.

    Cons

The company is very large and broken up. It is tough accomplish anything with HR. Raises only happen if you have an offer in hand and you on a high billing engagement. Bonuses are hardly worth it every quarter Advise loses money and greater BT boasts huge profits... BT is all who you know not what you know. Advancement only comes from having a relationship with people above you.

    Advice to Management

Restructure the sales force so that you are selling things that your technical force can deliver not what you think is most profitable. Do not just focus on the 10 million+ deals and focus on any decent billing opportunity and win with quantity...

    Pros

Great colleagues, great work/life balance opportunities to work remotely. Ability to work flexible hours as a team or an individual.

    Cons

Upper Management continuously asks for input over and over again but lacks the ability to effectively act on the advice given

    Advice to Management

Obviously the company has to pay attention to the bottom line in order to survive, however, it should not be the only or most important part of a successfully run operation.
