I have been working at Babson College full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I've worked in IT for many years. Babson's IT division (TSD) is seriously the best place to work in IT in the Boston area. The CIO (Phil Knutel) is one of the biggest reasons. He's brilliant (PhD, Harvard, etc.), down to earth, genuinely nice and cares about everybody in the division (even invites everyone to his Maine house every summer), and seems to be doing a lot to transform Babson's IT. (spending millions on new network, Workday, Salesforce). He's gotten rid of some serious deadwood, which has been huge for morale and productivity. You obviously don't come to a place just for the CIO, but the culture Phil has established really is light years better than it has been and set a new tone of high expectations, focusing on improving the student experience, etc. that permeates the whole division. Benefits are excellent, as others have stated.

    Cons

Not many I can think of. Pay is competitive with area colleges and universities, but not as much as you can make in corporate IT. Friends I have at companies work some crazy hours for the higher salaries, so on an hourly basis, it's probably equal. Resources range from scraping by to adequate. Most managers are pretty strong, with a few exceptions.

    Advice to Management

To IT Management: Keep doing what you're doing to make this a great place to work. To President Healey: Thanks for finally giving us a real CIO, and don't let Phil go anywhere please!

    Pros

Great environment and great benefits. Really enjoy the people in my department.

    Cons

It seems like the president keeps growing her staff and the expectation is that the rest of the school needs to cut costs.

    Advice to Management

Everyone should be asked to keep costs down. Please keep an eye on fiscal management.

I have been working at Babson College full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Work-Life Balance: While many employers tout this, Babson demonstrates it in multiple ways. They offer many paid holidays, flexible schedules, and telecommuting possibilities.

Cooperative Environment: I work in the Academic Technology Innovation (ATI) Center, under the IT umbrella. My colleagues are all very talented, each offering their own set of skills. We truly work as a team … supporting, encouraging and respecting each other.

Employee Development: Want to learn something new? Take a course to enhance or advance your career? Just ask, and in most cases, they'll make it happen.

Managers that Listen: I've never had an issue that I wasn't comfortable speaking to my manager about. While no boss is perfect, the people I've worked under at Babson have always treated me with respect and have been open-minded.

Benefits: Excellent retirement plan options, good medical benefits, life insurance, etc.

    Cons

Overall, compensation is competitive with other academic institutions, but in the IT realm, it is a bit lower than it should be.

    Advice to Management

Employee recognition programs should be expanded.
