I have been working at Baker Hughes full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Almost impossible to get fired. Job is secure and steady. Up Stream Chemicals hasn't had layoffs in down turn in oil industry. Unlimited vacation at managers discretion.

    Cons

No promotions for hard workers. Under performers get compensated just like high level performers. District managers shift underperformers around instead of firing them. District Managers are oblivious to what their EE's are doing good or bad. Benefits are horrible.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your high performing employees and fire the dead weight.

I worked at Baker Hughes full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Diverse & dynamic company. Good people to work with and mentor under.

    Cons

Baker has given up trying to keep good people. Very high turnover and poor treatment of their human assets. Virtually every good employee I knew in the company left or was forced out. Company has too many layers of management and poor leadership at the top.

    Advice to Management

Care about your employees, and the good ones might stick around. You're convinced your horsepower and chemical totes are your assets. Your assets are your people.

I have been working at Baker Hughes full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexible, global team and opportunities..some great leaders. "unlimited vacation"

    Cons

Low pay, overwork, lack of resources recently. Compensation and benefits are becoming the industrial standard and not one of the best any more. Part of the business is being controlled by the Italian with some vanity reporting metrics. Too many layers, difficult to make change

    Advice to Management

Empower employees to do the right things but accountable. More reward and recognition for team that meet target.

    Pros

Good pay and benefits in the past. Fairly flexible work environment (for an old school oilfield service company mentality).

    Cons

Benefits are declining with recent acquisition by GE. Future is uncertain. Good old boy mentality still prevalent.

I worked at Baker Hughes as an intern

    Pros

    - get an idea of what working in a big company is like
    - interns are integrated into real teams, so you get actual experience and not useless intern projects
    - they have the DTLP program for cs interns that hosts lunch and learns with different business leaders so you can get different perspectives on the business

    Cons

    - just went through a merger (2017) so management and who is doing what is a little messed up right now. Getting things approved takes a while
    - company as a whole is not doing too hot, so they won't take you out to lunch or anything like that

    Advice to Management

    - create more intern bonding events at beginning of semester so they can become friends quicker
