I worked at Baker McKenzie as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Fantastic team, great atmosphere and culture, kind people. Beautiful pace to work. You feel that you are taken care of and your manager cares about you. Minimal micro-management. Good communication.

    Cons

There is some politics in budgeting involved, hence I was not able to get a permanent employment there. But it is strictly subjective experience.

    Pros

It pays well. I cannot find any other Pro of working there.

    Cons

You work long hours under tremendous pressure. Remember you are a just a number there so you are replaceable hence you are not significant.

    Advice to Management

I worked at Baker McKenzie full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Highly recognized name makes you proud to say you work there. It also helps when reaching out to possible vendors and service providers because they're all hoping to get a big name on their client list.

    Cons

Totally dysfunctional, I would say toxic, culture of politics.

    Advice to Management

Recognize that you're a successful firm in spite of yourselves.

I worked at Baker McKenzie full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

(Last year worked was 2009, at which time I was laid off.) Learned a lot about litigation at many levels and in many practice areas. Other secretaries were friendly and helpful, and most of the attorneys were easy to work for.

    Cons

Sometimes partners did not know what policies had been put into effect and how those policies affected employees. Confusing self-review process.

    Advice to Management

Open channels of communication at all levels of attorneys and staff. Streamline self-review process.

I worked at Baker McKenzie full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Office space, in-house events, good people

    Cons

Very poor admin management! Position expectations are high yet merit adjustments and bonuses are very small. Internal promotions do not occur unless for very JR roles.

    Advice to Management

Admin structure is broken; invest in your people and keep your talent. Too many good people have left.
