I worked at Baker Tilly Virchow Krause full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Some of the people were nice, good busy season parties, decent pay

    Cons

Busy season hours were 70+ hours per week, offseason was 50+ hours per week, managers were all about protecting their job and would do their best to make you feel like you were worthless, culture was built around drinking, they would pressure you to work more and not record hours

    Advice to Management

train managers to focus on staff skill development, train how to actually manage people

    Pros

It should be that we are small and take care of our employees. Work on it! Make the work force feel special.

    Cons

The company has a weak training program for new hires. We are not encouraged to take employees to lunch or dinner after extra long hours during busy season. Managers are more concerned about managing up vs helping the rest of the employees. Poor 360 review process. Poor HR engagement.

    Advice to Management

Take care of associates. Make it seem like you care. People will work hard and stay longer with the company if they are appreciated.

I have been working at Baker Tilly Virchow Krause full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Baker Tilly is a great accounting firm to be working for. It is considered as a top 10 accounting firms in the United States but treats all their employees like individuals. There is a great relationship between all the members and management takes initiative to make sure everyone succeeds. As a former big 4 employee, this was exactly the kind of change I wanted. Busy season hours are also much more pleasant than some of the other accounting firms.

    Cons

I wish that they paid their starting staff more for the work that they perform. All individuals are also separated into different industries. As someone who is in commercial, I am not introduced to the work of other industries which I would potentially be interested in.

    Advice to Management

Start getting more exposure to people in different industries. Even though it helps people focus and perform well in one industry, giving them the opportunity to partake in work within other industries would benefit the employee greatly.

    Pros

Baker Tilly allows employees to try a wide variety of projects and provides to opportunity to specialize when desired. The company greatly cares about its employees career and setting them up for success in the future

    Cons

Billable hours are preached year round, even in non busy seasons making the environment stressful and unfriendly at times. Some of the management and partners micro manage schedules are very difficult to communicate and work with.

    Advice to Management

Less micro management would provide staff with the a sense of freedom and professionalism to complete tasks on time at their leisure

They have a fair pay scale.
    Competitive Benefits
Base level staff are very nice

    Pros

    Friendly co-workers.
    Decent location.
    Some good perks.

    Cons

Management was terrible. My manager gave me an outstanding review only to fire me 2 weeks later for a single mistake on a issue. Yes this issue was my fault but hardly deserved termination after my review from 2 weeks before. Should have warrented a warning. Left a bad taste in my mouth as to loyalty. Terrible butt kissing from certain memeber of the IT team in Milwaukee.

    Advice to Management

Communicate more with employees. Get management in each location instead of a single incompetent manager in Minneapolis.

    Pros

Free drinks, good people to work with, long hours until the job got completed. Overall, I think it was okay.

    Cons

I wish there was more opportunity to grow with the company. Both financially and in the position that I held.

    Advice to Management

Keep expanding and developing your people as this is the competative advantage for any business. This will pay off in the future!
