I have been working at Baker Tilly Virchow Krause full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great co-wokers, investment into developing people, and a friendly culture all make Baker Tilly a great fit for me personally.

    Cons

The one thing that really gets me is that I'm stuck using a computer monitor from what feels like 2005. Believe I'm paid a little less than other staff accountants at larger firms but I'd maintain that's because I have less put on me.

    Advice to Management

Tough to give advice to management outside of my specific group but I notice a lot of staff that really over achieve seem frustrated by the lack of compensation relative to those that don't. I know in the end that the over achieving staff will have more opportunities which has value but it seems like compensation and performance could be more highly correlated. That's a tough thing to get right and I think at a staff level they do a pretty good job but it's one of the complaints I hear most.

I have been working at Baker Tilly Virchow Krause full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people are what really drew me to Baker Tilly but the flexible work arrangements, competitive pay, focus on work/life balance and robust training programs, lots of one-on-one interactions with managers & partners is what has kept me here.

    Cons

Company communication as a whole could be stronger, sometimes you feel a little left in the dark or that there are a lot of things kept hush hush from employees.

    Advice to Management

Benefits such as alternative work arrangements, dress for your day, ect should be supported by all areas of the business (top down) and employees should feel comfortable taking advantage of these perks.

I have been working at Baker Tilly Virchow Krause full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great culture overall. Work/Life balance is very real here. Very flexible in terms of schedule and dress code.

    Cons

Some favoritism in how work gets allocated among staff.

    Advice to Management

Stop the favoritism when it comes to allocating work between staff.

I have been working at Baker Tilly Virchow Krause full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay and benefits are comparable to larger firms
    Flex time is possible
Baker Tilly's international reach is helpful as a resource and opportunity
    Advisory/consulting practice is strong

    Cons

Still suffering "growing pains" from absorbing smaller firms; managers tend to cluster with the colleagues from their old firms and not reach out to build relationships
Timely, specific and actionable feedback is hard to get -- too many managers depend on the annual review process for virtually all feedback
Awkward size of office -- too big to foster real collegiality, but not big enough to have multiple staffers working on similar engagements. If you are assigned a senior or manager who is helpful, then you'll be OK, but if you aren't, then you really have no one else to go to for help.

    Advice to Management

You're not the Big 4, so don't treat your employees as expendable.

    Pros

The firm is large enough that it can handle multi national companies that would expose its employees to a variety of work and experiences. You'll continuously learn new things. Compensation wasn't bad either. Excellent firm to work for.

    Cons

As with any public accounting firm, busy season is always a negative. However, they are flexible enough so you don't have to put your life on hold during this time.

I have been working at Baker Tilly Virchow Krause full-time

    Pros

Those in charge of Baker Tilly at the top seem nice, but it is impossible to get the NY and Melville offices in line with their thinking.

    Cons

Minimal quality of life. Lack of qualified staff. No set procedures across offices and inter-office. Toxic and negative environment - those in charge often they take their stress out on managers and staff. Pay not adequate for the number of hours that you spend working here weekly.

    Advice to Management

Hire more qualified staff. If you refuse to hire additional staff, then you need to pay the remaining people more for the added hours and effort they put in.

I have been working at Baker Tilly Virchow Krause full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The company really goes the extra mile in terms of all the small things around the office that make for a comfortable working environment like snacks, a wide variety of coffee and teas and food during busy periods.

    Cons

They can push the hours agenda at possibly the cost of quality of work.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing.

I have been working at Baker Tilly Virchow Krause full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The leaders truly "walk the talk." They do what they say and so much more.

    Cons

Very fast paced. It's an organization of high performers and high expectations. Not for those who want to coast.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing.
