I worked at Bal Seal Engineering full-time

    Pros

Ultimate job security, annual raises, pays well compared to other local machining jobs, good benefits, lots of overtime, opportunities to learn are there if you look for them.

    Cons

Near impossible for people to get fired, so most of the "machinists" there are just operators w/ 20+ years of experience that are only good for pushing buttons and do the bare minimum. Those with the knowledge to actually do set-ups and troubleshoot aren't recognized for their talent and hard work and usually don't get more than the minimum annual raise that everyone gets. Management does little to nothing about problem employees. Overtime is usually mandatory and lasts months, so poor work-life balance.

    Advice to Management

Don't create a meeting and blame the "team" when something wrong happens, look for the actual source/individual and fix the problem. Blaming the "team" for things that go wrong only brings down morale for everyone and fixes nothing, especially when it is because of a repeat offender that the supervisor never disciplines. Also, fire someone the first time they show up to work drunk and belligerent, don't wait for a second time.

I have been working at Bal Seal Engineering full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Nice environment. Interesting work. Some very nice people.

    Cons

Horrible raises. Expensive insurance for a family. The raises do not cover the rising insurance costs.

    Advice to Management

Be fair (your not) and keep your promises or don't make them at all. Subsidize the health insurance more. People are much smarter than you give them credit for and they remember what you say.

    Pros

    Some coworkers are decent people

    Cons

Owner runs everything. Managers just worry about their job and being "Yes" people. They will monitor your phone record, internet record and use it against you if needed. Who doesn't make some personal calls or use the internet sometimes? Yet, the fine print that we don't read prohibit of of these. There are people who walk round with clipboards at 7:10 AM to see who is in and who is late. 3 strikes and the boss will talk to you.

    Advice to Management

Hire competent Managers. Don't run everything old school way.

    Pros

New building.. nice facilities.. beautiful location

    Cons

last minute mandatory overtime, no work life balance, low pay, employees who are "yes" people rise fast... hard workers often overlooked... new ideas freak management out because they are bound to California rules

    Advice to Management

become free thinkers.. get rid of employees that don't pull their weight.. reward those that due.. long time employees don't mean productive employees

    Pros

    The paycheck pays the bills.

    Cons

Top management cannot manage because they are afraid of losing their jobs. They only hire "yes" men for VP positions. Too much micro managing. Everyone is walking on eggshells.

    Advice to Management

If they could take a moment to appreciate the employees that work for them, it might be a better place to work. Everyone is just trying to save their job on a daily basis.
