I have been working at Balfour Beatty full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Have been with the company for almost 10 years now and have had plenty of opportunity to progress my career. This however has been on the back of constant change. Good opportunities to express my opinions to Senior Management and have variety in my job.

    Cons

As mentioned above, the business has been in constant flux for a number of years resulting in a lack of confidence with the staff. Fully believe that this is being addressed however by the Build to Last initiative. Some people still in the buisiness who are not earning their extortionate salaries leaving some of the others (on lower salaries) to pick up the slack.

    Advice to Management

Stick with the plan, Build to Last is working, however they need to listen to the Operations teams to reduce pressure and allow them to deliver what they need to.

I worked at Balfour Beatty full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Mix bag of co-workers but a lot of staff there know their jobs and a few will care about you.

    Cons

Management should be clearer to staff in uncertain times, most of the time you are left to wonder what is happening to your post and when you are told it is already too late.

    Advice to Management

Keep staff informed not just say the party line

I worked at Balfour Beatty full-time

    Pros

Tier 1 Contractor so lots of opportunities to get involved in interesting projects. Training for graduates is pretty good with regular and updated courses.

    Cons

Can be long hours and early starts after a long drive, average pay, work away from home allowance a struggle to agree leaving an undercurrent of guilt in the air. Upgraded titles for members of staff but not promoting them from months to years.

I have been working at Balfour Beatty full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Nice people, working hours, varied projects, global player.

    Cons

Too many meetings, not enough action, lots of talk but no walk. Poor project governance, anything goes as long as you can tell a good story (facts are not needed). Poor performers is not dealt with, too much abdication of responsibility (masquerading as delegation), no logic in decision making.

    Advice to Management

Start to organise and manage the business! The region is drifting under a sea of underperformers that are not dealt with. There is no structure to the business due to the volume of regional management changes in recent years., those in place now do not know most of their staff. To date there is still no communicated regional management structure. Many good people continue to leave due to poor communication concerning their future and because they are too few in number (and getting fewer everyday). The good are expected to do too much, the bad do very little, and the ugly just make up the numbers. Some regions appear to be turning the corner and have hope for the future. Unless the above is dealt with soon the performance of good regions will be negated by the bad.
