I worked at Bally Total Fitness full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Friendly people, good work environment, able to move up in the company. Was able to travel up and down the west cost doing construction and remodels to the company facilities,

    Cons

Tried to expand too fast and, had too much debt when club membership slowed down causing them to go int bankruptcy. I retired in 2014 before the bankruptcy took place.

    Advice to Management

They needed better cost management over construction. Sometimes bigger is not always better, they were in competition with another health company that had better backing and built smaller facilities to keep their costs down.. .

    Pros

Worked with some of the best operators, programmers, systems analysts and learned a lot from working with them. The benefits improved throughout the time I was there and if possible I would still be there.

    Cons

The market and changes in the health club industry eventually. drove the company over time into financial distress that eventually caused several downsizes causing the selling off of large groups of our best clubs and eventually the loss of many of our jobs.

    Advice to Management

Having spent 35 years working there I can say expensive mistakes were made in efforts to replace legacy systems and there were several points over the years where better decisions may have been made but in and of themselves those would surely have slowed or delayed the way things unfolded, but may not have stopped the end result.
