I have been working at Baltimore City Police Department full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

If you want action, and non stop work load, this is the department for you. Plus there is enough overtime to work as much as you want. I’ve come close to doubling my my salary the last four years. My base salary is $74,000 annually, but made $121,000 in 2017 with overtime. Also, it is relatively easy to transfer out of patrol into a specialized unit within a year or two. Compared to other departments, where you could be looking at a minimum of 3-5 years before your even eligible to transfer to a specialized unit. Personally, I transferred out of patrol into the Violent Crime Impact Division (basically the same as narcotics) as a detective in 1.5 years.

    Cons

The BPD is very top heavy with command and supervisors. Many of them were promoted because of who they know, not because they were the best qualified person for the position. This creates an unprofessional and chaotic work environment much of the time. Plus there is a lot of backstabbing in the upper ranks. Also, technologically the BPD is behind most departments by as much as 10 years or more. As far as equipment, resources, and general necessities to complete many of the tasks required, the motto of seasoned officers/detectives is “We are expected to do more with less. The BPD way.”

    Advice to Management

Always remember where you came from. You were an officer/detective at one point in your career.

I worked at Baltimore City Police Department full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Ton of overtime, medical benefits, leave days. Receive more Experience than any department in Maryland. You will work for supervisors whom have less street experience than you do.

    Cons

Command staff is untruthful and lacking in every management category. Promotions and specialized transfers are based on favoritism, sexual favors, and race. Members of command use their power for intimate relationships with subordinates which is widespread and accepted. Surrounding jurisdictions with less crime and better conditions pay senior officers 20k a year more. Officers are charged with the most trivial violations. Resignations and retirements are the happiest days for employees.

    Advice to Management

    Replace current command staff
