I worked at Baltimore City Public School System full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I found the support among fellow teachers to be the greatest asset to working here.

    Cons

The children are falling through the cracks. Virtually every administrator I had had, did not provide the necessary support teachers were in dire need of. Additionally, they base their teacher ratings on state scores of students, regardless of academic progress students have made, if they do not score on grade level. Most students when you get them, are very low academically. Discipline problems are uncontrollable and go unaddressed. So they continue.
When conflicts arise, more often than not, the Principals side with students

I have been working at Baltimore City Public School System full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There is absolutely nothing like the salary and benefits anywhere I have ever worked. I had an awesome school, principal, and co-workers. I loved my kuds.!

    Cons

As with any job, there is paperwork that usually gets done at night or on the weekends.

    Advice to Management

Keep asking for and listening to input from staff. Have the same expectations for all staff.

    Pros

I enjoyed working with Baltimore City Public Schools because of the underserved population of students that I was able to support.

    Cons

Too much on the plate of a school principal.

    Pros

No on really bothers you, unless they get in trouble and need someone to be their scapegoat.

    Cons

Nepotism. It's all about who you know. If your not kissing the correct butt, you will be in trouble quick. If you do kiss the right butt, you can work there 30 years and rarely do any work. It is the city after all!

I worked at Baltimore City Public School System full-time

    Pros

The children are amazing, and you can help make a difference through teaching.
Benefits are great, and the BTU will fight for you to keep them.

    Cons

It is a large institution with many moving parts, and as only one of the parts your voice can get lost.
Many job requirements can cause high levels of stress.

    Advice to Management

Take time to stop by individual classrooms and hear the needs of teachers and students.
