I have been working at Baltimore County Public Schools full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Very supportive director/supervisor, no ed testing, little counseling, generally a flexible role as long as you hit your deadlines, lots of professional development and internal support.

    Cons

Varied caseloads - anywhere from 50-150, so it just depends; bureaucracy of a large system; PSW model so testing often requires more than one cognitive measure.

I worked at Baltimore County Public Schools full-time

    Pros

received all of my steps after working in two different school districts for the past 11 years, which is basically unheard of lots of professional development opportunities, many of which are paid

    Cons

So corrupt you'd think you're working in the city, one of my administrators was extremely unprofessional and possibly a sociopath, several of the buildings in terrible shape with little supplies and/or broken technology - but every K-12 student has a "device" (BCPS's outdated touchscreen laptops), nepotism abound, some extremely challenging behaviors w/little help from admin.

    Advice to Management

Try listening to your teachers' complaints, then certain schools wouldn't have such high turnover rates.

    Reading Specialist in Baltimore, MD

I worked at Baltimore County Public Schools

    Pros

Professional development opportunities and good pay compared to some districts

    Cons

Technology does not solve the achievement gap and changing demographics have to be faced.

    Advice to Management

Hire administrators who have been in a classroom as a teacher for a minimum of 5 or 6 years ...not an authority on teaching when you have not actually taught!

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Baltimore County Public Schools full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

This position had decent benefits that partially made up the low compensation. As a teacher there were ample opportunities for professional development.

    Cons

Inadequate Performance and Oversight of Administration Poor Job Security Poor Compensation Ten month pay period instead of a typical twleve month pay schedule

    Advice to Management

The basic advice that management will probably receive is that the teachers should be compensated more financially and that the administration should be more accessible and more responsive to teacher complaints.

I have been working at Baltimore County Public Schools full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great benefits when working for the county. Dedicated group of colleagues with whom to work and multiple opportunities for professional development. Opportunities for advancement for those who want it.

    Cons

As a special educator the paperwork load is exhaustive. Every year there seem to be more documents to complete that are redundant to ones already in existence. Pay could be better for those not in administrative positions.

    Advice to Management

Give more credence to the input from teachers and other staff in the classroom. We are in the trenches and really do have the kids best interest in mind. That's why we do the work we do.
