I worked at Banana Republic full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Really nice associates (for the most part). They work their butts off, day in and day out in awful environments with no commission and hours that are short and increasingly dwindling.

    Cons

The company has also been on the decline for so long, it's going to be near impossible to resuscitate. The brand and its design has lost its direction and has essentially no appeal. How are we still able (and expected) to sell these ugly mass atrocities? The company has gone too deep and now relies on three-tired sales (e.g. Selling an item on clearance with another 50% off with another 20% off). How can it expect to make any money selling t-shirts for $3 and pants for $8? Customers know how ridiculous this is but greed machine is insatiable. The employee discount is redundant when customers are constantly getting better deals. They've also been trying to strum up some more excitement recently, but no one really cares about Kevin Love and Olivia Palmero's influence peaked a decade ago.

    Advice to Management

I gave it my best and was a top performer, but was treated worse than the trash customers leave in around in the store. I just didn't have a good boss to say the least. Underqualified and completely lacking in people management with zero emotional intelligence. Not interested in you as a living, human being, but only as a cog in the evil machine. Their passive aggressive second-in-command was even worse. They deflected all responsibility and blamed others whenever you confronted them with anything. Also liked to leave "sick" to give themselves extended 4 day weekends. Good luck to them. No wonder 5 different managers (including myself) have left within the last 5 months. Oh yeah one last thing: if you outperform your colleagues of the opposite sex, don't expect to actually be paid an equal wage. Gap talks a lot about how it values gender equality but I've experienced the reality and this is all just BS. Sucks when you're onboarding new hires and have to show all these videos about Art Peck saying how awesome the company treats its people but you know the sad truth.

I worked at Banana Republic part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The management team at my location was always willing to accommodate my busy schedule and provide me with additional hours when requested. This is a company that has truly instilled the concept of the open door policy, allowing entry levels employees to feel comfortable discussing matters with upper level management. The company has a great return policy suggesting they actually stick by their product, unlike other companies (which made returns less awkward for employees). Great staff, great management, minimum wage pay, but they offered cash incentives for selling Banana Republic credit cards, which definitely helped!

    Cons

Their cash registers are a little outdated, making some transactions difficult. In addition, their systems went down several times throughout my employment, and their Sales and Promotions can be a little tricky to understand.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work, Stonestown!
