I worked at Banfield Pet Hospital full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Work with pets; decent benefits

    Cons

Overwork employees both in field and headquarters - most common saying around is you have to do a stretch job for two years or more before getting the title or pay for it. Constant leadership change has lead to chaotic environment with constant shifting focus from senior leaders. No development paths for associates - each associate told to 'make own way'
These issues have result in a flood of exits by quality, long standing employees including many senior leaders or directors. Hiring is always top priority because they can't stop losing staff.

    Advice to Management

Pick a focus and stick to it - you can't force everything at once
Start rewarding hard working associates before they leave
Remember the pets come first; Not your bonus check

I worked at Banfield Pet Hospital full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good ideas about preventative care. Pto

    Cons

Long hours, unrealistic expectations, no care for the hospital staffs, all about the money

    Advice to Management

Stop worrying about stupid numbers. Take care of your people in the hospitals. NEVER TAKE AWAY ASSOCIATE ENGAGEMENT FUNDS.... IT'S A PILLAR! Appreciate people who care and do a lot for the company instead of chasing them out!

I worked at Banfield Pet Hospital full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Easy to get hired.
    Free pet care.

    Cons

    Poor work life/personal life balance.
Don't plan to get pregnant if you are in a practice manager or higher position - they will fire you before you can go on maternity leave!
All about the money and not the associates busting their was day in and day out

    Advice to Management

Care about your associates on the front line! Stop running the business from thousands of miles away in a cushy office.

    Pros

    OWP for your pets, organization

    Cons

Management unorganized, high turn over, more worried about their numbers than pets, people with less experience get promoted, no follow through on promises, delegation of management tasks to get out of them

    Advice to Management

    Follow through on your promises

I worked at Banfield Pet Hospital full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great chance to learn new things about the animal health care field if you don't have much experience. Always a lot of work to do if you like to stay busy. Get a chance to work with a lot of animals in different stages of health.

    Cons

Low salary. You have to work weekends and holidays (they were only closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas while I worked there). They only really seemed to care about making money, and not the conditions that their employees were working in.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employee complaints and suggestions. A lot of people have awesome ideas, but none of them were ever taken seriously.

I worked at Banfield Pet Hospital full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Solid Pay
    Decent Benefits
Great people do work FOR the company, including vets and para
    Lots of animals

    Cons

Despite what senior management may say, Banfield is all about the money. The goal is more quantity over quality. More pets through the doors every day.
    Terrible regional management and support
Difficult to move up in the company
Unless you're a senior level manager, your opinion does not count

    Advice to Management

    Change your management culture entirerly

I worked at Banfield Pet Hospital full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The only pro I have would be my co-workers. They are the reason I stayed as long as I did!

    Cons

Management treats you like utter garbage and compensates you the same! Its extremely disheartening when your boss has no idea what it is you do or how you do it because they have ZERO VETERINARY EXPERIENCE yet they are the one telling you how to do a job that you have 10+ years experience in!!

    Advice to Management

For the love of God, stop hiring managers that have absolutely ZERO veterinary medicine background!!! Starbucks is seriously NOT the place to head hunt for Clinic Managers!

    Pros

Benefits, Pto, pet plans, great anesthesia protocols

    Cons

Company is all about the money. Cts is horrible to the hospital staff. They want more and more out of their doctors and techs.

    Advice to Management

Think about your people and the pets, not so much about the money!

I worked at Banfield Pet Hospital full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I love what I do working with animals and I care deeply about their welfare. Ability for cross training into other roles. They help pay to become a registered veterinary technician. Hours are flexible.

    Cons

High employee turnover rate , management changes too often, policies change too often. Once you get used to certain methods and practices, they change it up on you. Felt like I was working in retail and not an animal hospital. Prices increased every year, new products to sell and it was never enough, constantly wanted us to sell more instead of take care of what was important, like the pets health, equipment repair and employee development. If someone didn't have enough money for treating their pet and it wasn't an emergency then pets didn't get the service. Employees that lost interest and needed to be constantly motivated, very unprofessional. Biggest thing is the opportunity for higher pay and leadership roles, unless you were kissing butt, you couldn't get anywhere.

    Advice to Management

Work as an Assitant for a year and then feel free to micromanage us ( the good ones atleast). Stop opening new locations when your current ones have poor Yelp reviews, new location doesn't mean better customer service.

I worked at Banfield Pet Hospital full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You meet really great people. Great benefits and you have a solid foundation.

    Cons

Understaffed, overbooked and frustated. After while I realized the concern was about numbers and not quality care. A lot of the management passes small duties off to lessen their load, not being concerned with yours. I NEVER left on time. Turn over rate very high for a reason. I don't feel like my opinion mattered in this environment. When I left, my migraines stopped.

    Advice to Management

Actually listen to your techs and consider how they feel. Are we not to be a family????
