I worked at Banfield Pet Hospital full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits for you and Your Pet. Being able to pick up hours at other locations or at vaccine clinics is great for networking in the veterinary industry.

    Cons

Formulary regulations. Interfacing on pet-ware which is the in-house computer program used can take a lot of time when you are busy

    Advice to Management

Please listen to the nurses and csr's. We love our patients and clients and have valuable input.

I have been working at Banfield Pet Hospital full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great company vision, upward mobility options, benefits are good

    Cons

While the health care benefits are good, they could be better. Company seems to have trouble recruiting veterinarians but has a great mentor program in place to develop them.

    Advice to Management

The leaders need more administrative time in the hospital to achieve team goals. The current model seems to lend them into being out of their manager role too often.

I have been working at Banfield Pet Hospital full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Banfield makes a real effort to live up to the principles set forth by the parent company, Mars. To that end, they are very concerned with employee engagement, and a healthy work/life balance. The focus is certainly on attracting and keeping veterinarians throughout the company, but the staff at headquarters are equally engaged.

The pay is fairly competitive to start with, but has been stagnate for the past few years.

Having a well-equipped gym and showers on-site is a huge perk; it helps to manage stress and keep healthy.

Electric car charging stations (not free, btw) are plentiful.

The on-site bistro makes good food, is reasonably priced.

Having dogs in the workplace can be great, and it is an unbelievably dog-friendly building.

    Cons

The PTO accrual rate is lousy, and does not achieve a reasonable rate until after the completion of six years. PTO is non-negotiable when offered a position.

The high-deductible health plans aren't great, even if they're offset by an annual company-funded HSA deposit.

With the exception of those that live in suburbia, many commute from Portland, and are bottle-necked with increasingly bad traffic across one of two bridges.

The "Open Office" environment is objectionable to those of us in jobs requiring deep concentration, but there are "focus rooms" where you can take a laptop -though they lack good ventilation.

Having dogs in the workplace can be a huge distraction - there are some dogs which should not be allowed.

    Advice to Management

With the acquisition by Mars, Inc, and its pending acquisition of VCA, our largest competitor, and the formation of the global Veterinary Health Services group, we've yet to see a clear vision of what the landscape will look like in the coming years.

There is a huge drive to reduce overhead, and as Banfield has continued to grow massively, there has not been commensurate investment in our technology. While Banfield is bending over backward to attract and retain veterinarians, everyone supporting the company is having to do more with less, and with an aging, even buckling infrastructure.

I have been working at Banfield Pet Hospital full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Ok pay, great benefits, ability to transfer nationwide, good facilities, small teams, lots of PTO and vacation time, good equipment, three free wellness plans and good discount at the hospital and PetSmart and on Royal Canin food.

    Cons

High turnover, weird hours, management is inconsistent from location to location, focus on sale of wellness plans, preventive care is too much of the focus, scheduling options can makes clients unhappy. Wellness plans are encouraged but we can't see emergencies.

    Advice to Management

Bigger cities would greatly benefit from a 24-hour or emergency location. San Antonio has 8-10 hospitals in the area and many clients have emergencies but can't get in to any location to utilize their discounts.

-Company falsely represents its self; Not a hospital ; more so clinic's.

    Advice to Management

Over all major aspects of the company are great. Approach to clients is wonderful. Looking at the smaller aspects of the company would be beneficial. Many small issues that could easily be fixed are over looked making the job harder than it has to be.
