I have been working at Bank of America full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits, maternity leave is great, pumping room for nursing mom.

    Cons

On the Merrill Edge side all roles are focused on sales even service roles. They base your whole development on a metric called Deepening, which is getting someone to talk to a sales team about outside assets, and they will chose if you get promoted based on that alone. Very male dominated culture.

    Advice to Management

Stop making deepening such a priority for non sales roles and be more organized when it comes to rolling out policy changes.

"Won’t sugar coat it - the job is tough. A lot to learn and a lot of stuff to deal with"

I have been working at Bank of America full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They pay you to get licensed. They don’t just pay FOR you to get licensed, but they pay you as you study to get licensed. The first 1-2 months of work is nothing but studying for your licensing exams (series 7 and 66).

The medical and dental benefits are pretty good too.

The base pay isn’t great, but if you’re good at sales there is a lot of room for growth. There’s about 6 different kinds of sales teams you can move into, half of which could break 6 figures if you put in the time and effort.

Additionally, even if you’re not good at sales, there are plenty of back office roles you can move into as well once you learn the systems and products. It’s just harder to make that transition, and networking will be key.

Work life isn’t bad. Most of the people that work here are guys in their 20s, so if you fit that demographic it’ll be easy to make friends. Also, management knows that the job isn’t great (learning our products and systems is tough, and if a client is calling us, then chances are they’re frustrated about something), so they’re empathetic and usually go to bat for the employees.

    Cons

If you’re not good at sales, this will be a tough time for you. But even if you never actually go out of your way to make a sale, you should be able to hit your minimum numbers to not get fired just from clients calling in to ask for help with moving money into the firm - you’ll just never get a promotion like that.

    Cons

Due to nature of "sales" environment, this job can be very draining.
