I worked at Bank of America for more than 2 years

    Pros

In the right team - it can be great experience.

    Cons

I have contracted with them 5 times... every time it's like I am working for a different company, its such a huge company - culturally, every area is very different. They also have a bad habit of laying off tons of contractors around the budget time.... then hiring tons of them when the budgets are done. Doesn't make for a very stable environment for contractors.

I worked at Bank of America full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Benefits (401k, vacation, partial tuition), flexibility in working remotely sometimes, educational information available, discounts at various companies for being an employee, growth opportunities.

    Cons

Disclaimer: the following statements are said without any hard feelings to this company. I've had some incredible times and really appreciated my time there. But I'm stating why I left the company: Company has become extremely inflexible in creativity, focuses on how to lay off people than to grow them. Like any other company, your job depends on the leaders over you and I've had some good ones and some really bad ones....

I worked at Bank of America full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Professional organization. Atmosphere is very collegial. Lots of good people working there

    Cons

Subject to all the same big-business inanity as other large companies. When profits drop 20 basis points, they stop providing coffee cups, spoons and sugar for employees.

    Advice to Management

Get in touch with what the working employees three levels down from you are experiencing.

I have been working at Bank of America full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Wonderful people, well run (mostly) front line units and great educational opportunities.

    Cons

Lack of cohesive vision in the end state of the consolidation into shared services many of the technology and operational functions - some lack of transparency depending on where you work. "Old guard" (those there more than 20 years) stifling movement and high performers to encourage departures while they understandably try to find work for themselves and those who have not kept up and/or volunteered to take on more work...

    Advice to Management

Keep reaching through the organization and look for talent that has not necessarily been at the bank for a long time. You will be fine in bringing in more outside, fresh, perspectives. Skip levels and be committed to it to bring out others who may be covered up by the many layers still there.

I have been working at Bank of America full-time for more than 9 years

    Pros

Lots of opportunities to move around and go to different roles. Company is sort of structured like a consulting firm in that way. Very good parental leave policy (16 weeks paid leave). Good company benefits.

    Cons

Very large organization. Can take time to have decisions made. Rarely are you making decisions in a silo, and must include several business or support partners, which can lengthen the process.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the employee engagement surveys. Continue with the MyWork program as that is a great benefit for employees as well.

I worked at Bank of America for more than 4 years

    Pros

Leadership really allowed you to make decisions and listened when you had a great idea. They didn't make you waste your time with too many unneeded reports for status. They trust you to get your job done and make decisions.

    Cons

Pay was low compared to other companies. They have a lot of policies that tie the hands of managers in hiring you. If you work as a consultant, they make you take 90days off every 3 years so you won't say you were an employee. Even if your boss wants to hire you, they want to keep people as consultants so they don't need to give you benefits. I know consultants that have been back and forth for almost a decade and worked...

    Advice to Management

You have great leadership. Let them hire your better consultants. Hire consultants for shortages that are short term. Don't make it an overall hiring practice, You should also allow more remote workers again. It allows you to get great resources that might not be close to an office. Overall I loved my job and was very productive. I would have joined your company if you had just let me boss hire me.

I worked at Bank of America for more than 2 years

    Pros

Ability to move from role to role providing exposure to different lines of business. Great talent to work with. Many tools available to enhance the efficiencies and increase knowledge base. Vacation benefits are generous (however, it is often impossible to take vacation due to the significant workload.)

    Cons

Constant reorganization and downsizing causing the majority of employees to work in fear of losing their job. Highly competitive to the point of being a toxic environment to work in. Many of the members of leadership are less qualified than their employees. Work/Life balance does not exist though it is one of the "selling points" when making job offers. Long hours, MyWork program was discontinued which made the above...

    Advice to Management

Think about the decisions you make. Think about the candidates you hire. Act based on fact and not to get a minute in the spotlight, only to have that spotlight burn out and cost the organization good people and an exorbitant amount of money. Change is good, but make sure it is the right change.
