I worked at Barclays full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pays above average if you generate the fees from the clients.

    Cons

Political. Not meritocratic. Puts budgets and targets above all else. Churn of management. Directionless. Culture issues. You're a number. The clients are numbers. Better options out there.

    Advice to Management

Place higher value on values. Support staff, support clients. Put an end to politicians that operate through the spine of your business. Sort culture. Out with old, in with the new.

    Cons

Very Bad career development opportunities. Poor support/comms. No salary increase to motivate or retain good people. Too much beauracracy. Objectives are changing too frequently.

    Advice to Management

I have been working at Barclays full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Salary is better than competitors

    Cons

Incompetent managers don't understand the word finance and service only sales sales and sales.
Compliance is a shamble hence they try to put it in staff when they get caught.

    Advice to Management

Give more training and get the real caring culture in the group as it's a very bad place to work

    Pros

I worked in the Head Office in Canary Wharf
    Good name
Large organisation meaning if you're fortunate enough you can scour for and find fresh internal opportunities
Lots going on -different networks and communities

    Cons

Values and morals not embedded - it really is dog eat dog. It's not clear what the organisation stands for
No leaders, lots of managers - very hard to find sponsors/support
Poor progression - you can easily stay at the same level and pay grade for years and years and I met many who time and time again were denied promotions and pay rises despite being excellent
Multiple layers of management doing the same or very similar things -very hierarchical
Lack of meritocracy - it's not clear what promotion criteria is
Very traditional - poor evidence of racial and gender diversity in top leadership positions

    Advice to Management

Develop some sort of culture and values that you actually stand by
Reduce heavy Director level - too many directors all fighting for the limelight and doing the same projects. I never knew it was possible to have so many different types and levels of Directors in one organisation
    Simplify people structures
Review performance criteria - embed meritocracy

    Cons

Firing rounds 2x a year (January and July), management always says "this was the last one" and yet people continue to disappear, morale is low and office politics dominates - no room to grow

    Advice to Management

Change management of investment bank - current management gives no clear business direction

    Pros

Opportunity to work on high profile fast paced projects
Good office facilities and flexible working approach
    Opportunity to work internationally

    Cons

Aggressive blame culture where the loudest voice gets heard. Focus continually on getting things done with little consideration for the right way to do them

    Advice to Management

Upgrade technology so tha staff have something to work with
Listen to all voices not just the aggressive ones
Support your staff; have their backs, let them feel like they won't be blamed for trying things differently or for trying to make things work

I have been working at Barclays (More than a year)

    Pros

Some great individuals working there still
    Benefits outside of salary

    Cons

Bullying tactics still rife in senior managers
    No support
Breaches in staff privacy and data protection
    Customer abuse
Expect to work over 45hrs per week and 6 day weeks
Mostly poor management with very limited leadership skills
Expect to be hit on by your boss with the promise of promotions if your willing

    Advice to Management

Stop paying staff off with redundancy and allowing them back at the same grade/salary 6 months later (cost waste).
Stop making staff accountable for the legacy issues the bank has.
Create a decent and rewarding incentive package or a higher basic
