I worked at Barclays (More than a year)

    Pros

    Nice office - very posh
Good pay, pension and private healthcare

    Cons

No flexible working for me at least!
    VERY snobbish and unfriendly colleagues
Very corporate, formal environment - not suited to me and I resigned after a matter of months.
Didn’t seem to be any career progression or training for secretarial staff.

I worked at Barclays full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Technology and colleague tools.
    Nice gym.

    Cons

Too rigid now with focus on fluffy values instead of just getting the work done.

More red tape when I worked there.

    Advice to Management

    None.

I worked at Barclays as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Team was great, most other teams at Barclays are open to meeting, and internal mobility is decent.

    Cons

Work wasn't challenging, HR is a mess, salary isn't the best, values are not acted upon at MD levels.

    Advice to Management

Please, please, please fix your HR department. They are an absolute disaster and have no idea what is going on.

I have been working at Barclays full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - If you get the right manager who's trustworthy then you can learn and develop a lot.

    - People are generally friendly and most know what they are taking about in terms of their expertise.

    Cons

    - People management skills of managers vary a lot. I've been very lucky to have had a great manager, but than due to a restructure was my worse experience in my whole career, and you have to look out for some manager's favoritism to the point whereby it's detrimental to your own career.

    - Paid little vs. other banks and even other sectors, but constantly told by HR salaries benchmark well. So often feel underpaid and not recognised.

    - Extremely hard to progress and develop. Experience and eagerness doesn't mean much, it's more on if you walk the walk and talk the talk.

    - Like most huge corporations, be careful who you trust. And document everything to back yourself up.

    Advice to Management

    - HR processes could be improved a lot to retain and develop existing staff. Currently it's a lot easier to get a new job with much better salary externally, than to get internal progression at Barclays.

    - Processes and bureaucracy are making a lot of things harder/ complex to do. A tip would be to keep things simple and user-guides/instructions to be in user-friendly language.

    - Seriously look/ audit the resourcing of the teams. Some teams have a lot more resourcing then they need, and seem to always be expanding constantly, whereas other teams are very under-resourced and need to be asking for more capacity or head counts for years, and still don't get granted. Some teams are taken for granted and work a lot of over-time (not paid) whilst others are twiddling their fingers.

    - Great benefits structure
    - Can be flexible

    Cons

    - Poor salary increases
    - Management just doesn't care
    - Long working hours
    - Biased management depending on how you get on with them.

    Advice to Management

    - Care for your company more then your own ego.

I worked at Barclays full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good people and ok learning for the first year. Some of the senior staff is approachable but in general managers act like school teachers.

    Cons

Management seems clueless re business direction. Too many changes and uncertainty are a constant. Remuneration doesn't reflect ones hard work and very political.

    Advice to Management

Stick to your 5 years plan, if there is one!

I worked at Barclays full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There exists a well set structure

    Cons

There is stagnation especially when one is best performer. Managers fail to recognize hardworking colleagues. It takes long to get the required experience in a section and as such growth takes long.

    Advice to Management

Though there are structures, recognize the best in a team and every member contribute to company growth

I have been working at Barclays full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nothing really stands out as I have not had the most positive experience here. I guess they are somewhat supportive of flexible working.

    Cons

Barclays has a close relationship to the Armed Forces so like to recruit people from the army regardless of whether or not they can do the job.

More concerned with whether or not your face fits rather than getting the right person for the job.

    Advice to Management

If someone is doing a good job then reward them.
