I have been working at Barclays full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The pay is good and I really enjoyed working in the team I started in. This team was broken up as part of restructuring but this is to be expected. .

    Cons

Went through restructuring whilst I was there which split up the team I was working in. Had few opportunities to move within Barclays and ended up taking a job outside of Barclays. The IT is also ancient.

    Advice to Management

Could improve internal mobility, although they have already start to do this. Should also update IT.

I have been working at Barclays full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Exposure to complex issues. Lot of knowledgeable colleagues.

    Cons

Politics. Very hierarchical. People give more weight to title than experience. A few rotten apples in senior leadership ruining the culture for the whole firm.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the rot at the top

    Pros

Definitely the people! There's a lot of effort placed on customer, colleague, company and citizenship. Enjoyed giving back/volunteering activities with various teams. Not restricted to one volunteer day!

    Cons

Difficult to move from branch to corporate. As an organisation, they would benefit from using the skill set of internal staff. Met some of the brightest front-line staff with great academic accomplishments. I think the company sometimes misses out by not offering people who are so passionate and proud of the company more appropriate opportunities in appropriate areas. Mismatched skills.

    Advice to Management

    Consider internal candidates more seriously.

I worked at Barclays (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good hours, good pay, great opportunities to develop yourself. Your branch is your team and your weekday family.

    Cons

Personally I was given a rough time and forced to leave after losing a parent and having a child. I wanted to study a degree and they refused to give me a day off, knowing my situation. They did me really dirty. They don't care about you perosonallly they just want you to achieve those targets.
Inner city branches can be very busy.

    Advice to Management

Treat staff fairly. People are human beings not slaves.

I have been working at Barclays full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people and culture, good place to work. Big organisation with varied roles available. Supportive and inclusive culture, diverse as well.

    Cons

Poor IT, very bureaucratic, and the firm is shrinking so very limited opportunity for growth. Strong focus on cost which means less ability to travel, secure funds for training and development.

    Advice to Management

Be willing to spend a bit more on employees. Look to grow and expand to new areas rather than just look to shrink and consolidate.
