I have been working at Barclays as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

The working environment, is polished, quiet, and casual. This is an excellent working environment, in which there is no pressure. Very laid back atmosphere is nice.

    Cons

The only downside to working at Barclays, is that they need to pay more money. In addition, since I am on contract, health insurance is not great, also no PTO.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your employees, if you want them to stay. I do not like companies that are cheap. Especially large corporations, like this one who can actually afford it.

I have been working at Barclays full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Solid strategy with realistic goals.
Many normal people (that is actually not the norm on Wall Street).
I am given the means to succeed.
I am surrounded by competent people who genuinely want to contribute. I feel I don't have to do it all by myself.
I have the best flexibility / autonomy so I can care for my children while having a very big say in the strategy of my team.

    Cons

At times, it seems European banks are at a competitive disadvantage vs. US banks. It makes it sometimes harder to win business.
Barclays may be more risk averse than some US peers.

I worked at Barclays full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Competitive compensation and benefits. Reasonable effort exerted to make it a good place to work and to support employees. Admirable support for community involvement.

    Cons

Somewhat limited opportunities for US employees, at least in IT. Unimaginative technology and tension between the petty fiefdoms which stifle innovation and co-operation. Ambivalence about being in business to earn a profit but then an unfortunately frequent occurrence of "bad" banker behaviour by individuals in the bank.

    Advice to Management

Make up your mind if you are a commercial bank or an investment bank and then execute. Foster more co-operation between organizations.

    Pros

Excellent company to work. Good benefit and smart people. Many good opportunities to transfer to another role once you are in.

    Cons

Any big company always has something that you don't like. But I think as long as you have a good manager to support you. Then everything will be fine
