I worked at Barclays full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Competitive compensation and benefits. Reasonable effort exerted to make it a good place to work and to support employees. Admirable support for community involvement.

    Cons

Somewhat limited opportunities for US employees, at least in IT. Unimaginative technology and tension between the petty fiefdoms which stifle innovation and co-operation. Ambivalence about being in business to earn a profit but then an unfortunately frequent occurrence of "bad" banker behaviour by individuals in the bank.

    Advice to Management

Make up your mind if you are a commercial bank or an investment bank and then execute. Foster more co-operation between organizations.

    Pros

Barclays is a stable and reliable company. Its reputation is well-established, and it is considered very reliable. You do not have to wonder whether the paycheck is going to come or not.

    Cons

There is a lot of red tape involved in decision making at every level. The company moves too slowly to keep up in some industries. Management is generally very cheap.
