    Pros

-People are nice. You can't be an a-hole and work at Barcap. They focus on teamwork and have a very flat structure.
-Senior management is pretty nice and there is less of a hierarchy.
-The bank is expanding and not laying off people like its peers in these turbulent markets. Very good long term prospects.
-Barclays is taking market share form many of its competitors.
-They have a good balance of diversity and doesn't feel as rigid or stern as other banks.

    Cons

-Technology not the best on the street.
-Not as prestigious as Wall Street elite firms.
-Not the best work life balance. Some desks have it better than others.

    Advice to Management

-Keep recruiting people from various backgrounds because they have advantages the traditional Ivy League kid lacks.
-Focus on building the business in areas that you can lead in.

  2. "Barclays looking growing footprint in North America"

    Pros

Barclays is trying to grow its footprint in North America. They have leading electronic platforms and have not put much effort into selling it globally or regionally until summer of 2007. In terms of cross selling platforms of Fixed Income, FX, Commodities, FX Options, Money Markets, and Futures the BARX has a very strong offering compared to other banks. I have reviewed and worked with the top 5 in the last 5 years. Barx is now pushing from the TOP Mgmt down to drive Emerging Markets Electronically.
Resources and support from all different asset groups are very well coordinated and driven for success....more so than I have witnessed at DB or UBS. I view it more like a GS.

    Cons

Old regime fighting change. The old school traders that are not embracing electronic trading are slowly losing out because their clients are going electronic with or without them. Second, BARX Upper Management is forcing them to support electronic trading. They expect the traditional sales guys to be working on cross products and structured products that are more profitable for 80% of their day. The day to day trades that can be done electronically they want moved over to the BARX platform as it is cheaper for the bank to process those trades electronically and frees up the time of the traditional voice sales coverage to work on structured trades.

    Advice to Management

IT resources is limited, but these limitations are the factors that will impede BARX goals of electronic trading and thereby reduce costs and increase volumes & revenues. examples would be resources for FIX, BARX subs out to Logiscope....this should be done in house. BARX can not handle 3rd party notification for settlements...this impacts BARX ability to compete for the Corporate space. I believe all the above are documented and being worked on with solutions in the next 4 quarters possibly.

Opportunity to run with the ball
    Good culture "Lehman" v2
    Strong senior sponsorship
    Retention is key to management

Pay could obviously be better. Salary is clearly not as competitive as Goldman Sachs or Morgan Stanley. Management is aware and they are "trying" to impove

    Pros

Barclaycard US pays well compared to its competitors and gives out 22 days of vacation to new employees. It has a friendly environment and has a lot of fun and interesting events to keep people engaged. Recently we had a ping pong tournament and have a baseball game planned soon.

    Cons

Right now most employees don't have laptops so we need to print out presentations before we go to meetings instead of just emailing it.
