Lots of work, minimal training. Rare growth opportunities, terrible yearly raises

    Advice to Management

    Pay wages properly

I worked at Barco full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fairly low stress environment, with decent work life balance.
    Occasionally the work is interesting.
    Flexible hours and casual dress.
A good place to work if your a few years from retirement, or you don't change or challenge.
Most of the engineers are competent.

    Cons

Silos silos silos, poor communication between groups and divisions.
Almost no career opportunity, basically a dead end job, unless your a Belgian.
Get stuck working on the same old stuff until you die.
    Belgian's difficult to work with.
The company is penny-wise and pound foolish.
A really terrible health care plan.
Almost no useful training, or concern about employee development.
Terrible processes when they even exist.
Dead end job, oh did I mention that already.
Ineffective HR, god knows what they do.
Raises are a joke, your lucky to get 1%-2% while the company has record earnings.
High turn over, at least in some divisions, and very little is done to replace these employees.
Obsessed with cost cuttings, wants cheap, with no concern for quality.

    Advice to Management

Your unilateral policies suck, there is a reason people keep walking out the door and moral is so low. Good luck keeping anyone good long term with your lame raises, and dead end positions.

I worked at Barco (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Work/life balance is good. The technology is fun to work with. It's a video company!

    Cons

Only a single, unaffordable health plan. Below average pay with about 2-3% annual raise. People openly complain about this and challenge management. Over all compensation is not worth it. NA offices are treated like 2nd class citizens. Dead end job. Most people have the same post for 10-20 years.

    Advice to Management

    Reward your talent.

    Pros

Nice building, nice location and close to the freeway

    Cons

Horrible middle mgmt, looking to blame employees for anything gone wrong.

    Advice to Management

Too many supervisors and middle managers. A complete waster of company money.

I worked at Barco full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good people with whom to work. Chance to travel. Working for a European company is interesting. Products are used in interesting ways. Nice physical location.

    Cons

Working for a European headquartered company (all decisions come from there and sometimes our opinion is not solicited). I worked with just a very few REALLY BAD APPLES - and nothing was done to change their behavior. The cool place to work is too open - very, very, very hard to focus / concentrate. Sometimes too much travel.

    Advice to Management

Invest more fully in your new businesses. Your expectations are completely unreasonable given that you are penetrating new markets and new distribution channels. Spend money to make money.

I worked at Barco full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great industry reputation
    Great facility
    Great people
    Nice diversity
Located in Rancho Cordova, CA amid several other high tech companies
    Company communucates well with stakeholders
Site offers fun events for employees

    Cons

Employees work too hard without relief
Expectations impossible to meet with time, systems and human resource constraints
    Demand required don't match rewards
    Outdated, ineffective performance appraisal
Too much hierachy, too many levels in decision-making
    Corporate control, rigid and slow
    Some system processes overly complex
Everything controlled and on intranet, but not archived, making poor search results

    Advice to Management

Upper management seems well intended. Trust your lower level managers and employees to make decisions.
Sites should not have harsh impacts of huge delays in corporate response times.
    Simplify. Simplify.
That said, everyone there is doing their best. May the company continue improving and be successful.

I have been working at Barco full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Smart, dedicated people. Good products.Good benefits and vacation policy. If a problem develops everybody strives to get it fixed. Occasional trips to Europe.

    Cons

Uber politics. There seems to be a standard where the US operations are held accountable, but European operations are not. No cohesive strategies between divisions. The motto of the Belgians is the title of this review.

    Advice to Management

Not applicable, they are not going to change any way.
