I worked at Barnard College full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Ability to work with a variety of talented, skillful, and intelligent colleagues. Possible to have direct contact and influence across the entire college's hierarchy. Depending on your position, opportunity for work/life balance. Great opportunity for a self-starter to grow in an academic environment. Opportunity to get a degree in a world-class liberal arts college.

    Cons

Depending on your position, less opportunity for work/life balance. Due to their profession, some Department Chairs may not have an ideal managing style.

I worked at Barnard College full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - real commitment to furthering women, especially if the women are students. - nice campus and location - fantastic, smart colleagues (depending on department)

    Cons

    - low stagnant wages - my department had basically no opportunity to use the generous vacation time due to nonexistent work/life balance - middle management has NO supervisory/people management training - middle management seemed to hate senior management and take it out on junior staff - lots of lip service to "empowering women" ..all women, except the ones that actually...

    Advice to Management

    - train your people who manage people or let them go - reconsider salary structure. Pay overtime to ALL members of departments that work beyond regular hours, or hire more people. - let people use their hard earned time off - if you can't pay more or promote people, figure out mentoring or other professional development opportunities to improve morale

Work life balance is mocked. Turnover is out of control.

I have been working at Barnard College

    Pros

Laid back environment (in comparison to other places) that helps create a good work/life balance. The people here are a pleasure to work with for the most part and may can help you along the way. The benefits are pretty good as well.

    Cons

People like to talk more than they need to. The college as a whole has all of these unnecessary politics and procedures (or lack of) that are not clear, along with some petty people. The bureaucracy just to get your job done is unpleasant. No growth either and the pay gets you by, but could be higher.

    Advice to Management

Please don't hire petty managers (one is too many). Maybe upper management should listen to their staff to actually realize its not all sunshine and rainbows at work.

I worked at Barnard College full-time

    Pros

    - As in most universities, the benefits (especially the very generous vacation and time off policy) have far outweighed the salary. - Great tuition benefit - Lovely mission and people who are passionate about a womens' college education

    Cons

    - New administration (especially since 2011) and caused mass turnover - Don't expect a raise or promotion - Seems like a good deal for the more senior folk, but the more junior staff members don't stick around too long unless they're doing a master's program - Tendency to have one person do the job of 2-3 people, even at senior level - Work/life balance in my department is...
