I have been working at Barnes & Noble part-time

    Pros

Amazing coworkers that make even hard shifts fun

    Cons

Home office and upper level has no idea what the stores are like. Often, stores are unprepared for situations that home office sets up, like events, due to poor resources given.

    Advice to Management

Spend more time in your stores or promote people who have worked in the retail setting.

    Pros

Flexible with my school schedule, great people to work with, great health benefits, 401k, learned a lot about leadership

Retail is retail... Dealing with awful customers, random schedule, always worked on weekends.

    I worked at Barnes & Noble full-time

    Pros

BN.com - young and sort of cool place to work at. Very dynamic and there is always something going on around you with all these people in one long floor between 8th and 9th ave on the lower west
Retail office - quiet, easier to focus

    Cons

BN.com - loud open space no cubicals. Managers (at least mine) were not trained and tried to do whatever the hack in mind to manipulate for his favor (I'll stop here)
Retail office - quit, boring traditional working environment by Union Square (location is pro)

    Advice to Management

    Train your managers

I worked at Barnes & Noble full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I worked in the stores for just over 7 years and really enjoyed my time there. I worked my way up from seasonal to full time bookseller to lead to manager. There is definitely room for growth since most people don't stay in a position forever. I worked with people who also transitioned to a corporate level. So if you work close to or the NYC area, there can be the chance for that as well (but that is far less likely).

    Cons

When I told people I worked there 9 out of 10 times they said - "oh my god, I love B&N. I would love to work there! I would read books all day." If that is what you are thinking, don't apply. You may spend a boring day at the customer service desk or at cash wrap from time to time, but you more often than not will be running around shelving, helping customers, working on displays and cleaning up after the messes that customers leave around the store. I'm not saying that you don't have fun at work, but it isn't a small independent bookstore. You have responsibilities that come from a corporate level and they need to be done on a certain time schedule.
