I worked at Barrick Gold full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Worked with some really great people. Sadly, that is about all the is to say on the "Pro" side.

    Cons

All of the mining people who where in upper management have been run off and replaced with bean counters with no clue about mining and only concerned with their own bonus package. They sell off mines then insist on more production from less resources. They'll see a short term boost in the market, but it cannot be sustained.

    Advice to Management

Hire some executives who have a least some mining expertise (other than counting the profits).

    Pros

compensation, benefits, safety, time off policy.

    Cons

Miss managed from the corporate level.

    Advice to Management

Stop over extending yourself and start vetting the risk fully with the right people. Don't let the board members use all the equity for personnel gains.

    Pros

They have two good mines in NV, they pay well and there are some good people working there.

    Cons

Company has gone downhill lately, not just the layoffs but the company culture has suffered, almost like the company exists to protect the jobs of the executives and managers up top by sacrificing as many little guys as is necessary. Company is still run by people who make terrible financial decisions. This on

    Advice to Management

Stop running the company like it's a government welfare office, run it like a lean mean business.

I have been working at Barrick Gold full-time

    Pros

The US mines are well run and have very experienced and/or eager to learn employees.

    Cons

Lower gold price and heaps of debt do not look good for the future of Barrick. They are selling off assets and employee morale has suffered significantly because of this coupled with pathetic politics. Top level exec's are micromanaging lower level employees and making the situation worse because they are pulling at straws instead of making informed decisions. Top Corporate management needs an overhaul. The mines are well run by experienced people and Corporate just gets in the way of efficient mine operations. The higher a monkey climbs the more you see of his behind.

    Advice to Management

Corporate management does not have the expertise to run the mining show. Leave the mines alone, they will operate more efficiently without them.

I have been working at Barrick Gold full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, stable work environment for the industry.

    Cons

Management doesn't address the issues in the work place, they ignore it and hope it will go away. Pay not really based on performance. Every hourly employee paid the same for their tech level no matter the type of job.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the employees, if you are losing a lot of employees in a certain field maybe come down and talk to people.

    Cons

Luck of leadrship in middle management, cliquey middle management, very little communication and feedback

    Advice to Management

Rotate the middle management - too long time in the same place (>10 years)

I have been working at Barrick Gold full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Global company. Opportunity to work on different projects and gain exposure to different countries. People (below VP level) great to work with. Peers have your back.

    Cons

Leadership does not have the backs of the employees. Employees thrown under the bus to save own skin.

No real business direction. Constantly changing initiatives for flavour of the month. Extremely frustrating environment. No clear direction.

Executive Leadership Team is in total disarray. Not at all cohesive. Each one out for themselves. The fighting within the ELT has become legendary. The best part is they think the employees don't notice. We see it and we talk about it.

Chairman of the Board is the one who really runs the company. Not the president. Chairman is really a "CEO"

Chief Operating Officer COO (hand picked by Chairman) is ex-military and only hires ex military. He also only promotes anyone who is ex-military. People have been fired or have resigned only to be replaced with military buddy of COO who has zero business or mining experience. HR looks at military candidates first - regardless of skill level or qualifications.

Only way to advance in company is to latch on to the COO's clique.

Company has lost so many good people and will loose more who are tired of the lack of leadership and blatant nepotism.

It's common knowledge amongst corporate employees that people are looking for jobs elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Change all of the Executive Leadership. Hiring practice needs to be changed so all qualified candidates considered. Not just military. Same goes for promotions and partner program.

I worked at Barrick Gold full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Some great people. Too bad upper management either drives them out or underutilizes them.

    Cons

How many SVPs does one head office need? Culture = clique. If you are not in, you will never be promoted or advance.

    Advice to Management

Move beyond rewarding sucking up culture to actually rewarding employees for doing a good job.
